March 3, 2005
FRESNO, CA - The UCLA softball team improved to 12-4 on the season with a 4-1 victory over Kent State on Thursday night at the Bulldog Classic tournament. Caitlin Benyi hit her third home run of the season in the game and freshman pitcher Anjelica Selden continued her streak of starts with double-figure strikeouts, posting 13 K's in the game.
The Golden Flashes scored first with two hits in the top of the first inning. Julie Kemensky opened the rally with a one-out infield single, followed by a double to deep left field by Ashley Fairhurst to give Kent State the 1-0 lead.
UCLA tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning as Krista Colburn reached leadoff on an infield error. She went to second on a ground-out by Kristen Dedmon and came around to score on a two-out single up the middle by Ashley Herrera.
The Bruins left the bases loaded in the bottom of the third inning as Andrea Duran led off the inning with a walk, followed by a single through the left side of the infield by Jodie Legaspi. After an Emily Zaplatosch walk loaded the bases with no outs, but the Bruins were unable to push the go-ahead run across the plate, as a strikeout, a fielders choice with the out at the plate, and a ground-out ended the inning with the game still tied at 1-1.
A one-out home run to left field by Caitlin Benyi gave the Bruins a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. A two-out RBI walk to Dedmon followed, completing the scoring with the Bruins leading 4-1.
Selden completed her evening in the circle with 13 strikeouts in the game and improved her collegiate record to 8-1 on the season. She finished with a three-hit shutout on the night.
UCLA is scheduled to return to action with two games on Friday at the Bulldog Classic. The Bruins will play Mississippi at 11 am and Iowa State at 3 pm, weather permitting. Intermittent showers are forecast for Fresno on Friday.
