March 4, 2005
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP)- Kristen O'Neill matched her career high with four 3-pointers and scored 19 points to lead Washington past Oregon State 81-68 in the first round of the Pac-10 tournament on Friday night.
Cameo Hicks added 10 points as the seventh-seeded Huskies (14-15) won their fifth in the last six games.
Shannon Howell scored 25 points for the Beavers (6-23), who lost their eighth straight and 13 of 14. Kim Butler added 15.
Washington, trying to avoid just their second losing season in June Daughterty's nine years, meet No. 2 seed Oregon in Saturday's quarterfinals.
The Huskies, who have won eight of the last 11 games against the Beavers, lost in the semifinals each of the past two years.
Washington shot over 50 percent for just the third time this season.
Oregon State made seven of its first 15 shots in the second half but the Huskies were just as effective, shooting 60 percent in the first 13 minutes of the half.
Washington raced to an early lead with a 12-2 run midway through the first half. O'Neill scored eight of her points during the run.
Oregon State went without a field goal for over seven minutes, committed 17 turnovers, and finished 5-of-20 (25 percent) from the floor in the first 20 minutes.
The Beavers have had their troubles before the break. After scoring at least 32 points in their first six games, they have scored less than 30 in 20 of the last 23.
Cheri Craddock hit one of two free throws in the closing seconds to give the Huskies a 34-18 halftime lead.
