March 4, 2005
ROUND ROCK, Texas - First baseman Coby Mavroulis hit a two-run homer as part of a three-run inning Friday as the No. 15 Texas A&M Aggies defeated the No. 23 USC Trojans, 3-1, in day one action of the Maxwell Auto Group Round Rock Classic at Dell Diamond.
Jason Meyer improved to 4-0 on the season for Texas A&M (10-4) with eight strong innings, scattering five hits while walking four and striking out four. Kevin Whelan struck out the side after entering in the ninth to earn his first save of the season for the Aggies.
Sophomore Ian Kennedy (1-1) took the loss for USC (6-3) after starting off with a bang. Kennedy opened the game by striking out the first seven batters in a row before the fourth. He went seven innings, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts. It was the third time in his career that he registered 10 or more strikeouts in a game.
Texas A&M Parker Dalton led off the bottom of the fourth with the first hit off Kennedy, lining a double down the right field. Designated hitter Ryan Hill threw the bat out and poked a blooper to right field to score Dalton for a 1-0 lead. Mavroulis then blasted the two-run homer to right field for the 3-0 lead.
The Trojans tried to rally several times, but hit into three double plays on the evening.
In the top of the eighth, pinch hitter Baron Frost and Vieira led off with back-to-back singles. Matt Cusick's ground ball went through the legs of Mavroulis to score Frost for the Trojans' only run of the game.
USC faces No. 12 Rice tomorrow in a 3 p.m. Central start. The game from the Dell Diamond will not be broadcast, but Gametracker live stats will be available at usctrojans.com.
