No. 2 California Wallops Portland State, 8-0

March 3, 2005

HONOLULU, Hawaii - California starter Kelly Anderson tossed a one-hitter and shortstop Chelsea Spencer's first-inning double plated all of the offense the No. 2 Bears would need Thursday evening in an 8-0 defeat of Portland State at the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament.

The Bears (12-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as Spencer doubled to left field with two outs to score centerfielder Kaleo Eldredge and left fielder Lindsay James.

In the third inning, catcher Haley Woods swatted her third home run of the season, a solo shot to center field for a 3-0 Cal lead.

The Bears added four additional runs in the fifth. Junior Emily Friedman picked up her first RBIs as a Bear, singling to right field to score Spencer and first baseman Julie Meyer. Later in the inning, freshman Katelyn Valenzuela scored on a throwing error by Vikings catcher Rose Rutledge and rightfielder Alex Sutton singled home pinch runner Erika Racklin for a 7-0 lead. Portland State (2-5) committed five errors in the game.

Spencer added her third RBI on the night in the sixth, doubling home second baseman Jessica Pamanian to invoke the mercy rule and a Cal victory.

Anderson held the Vikings hitless through three innings and struck out four batters in improving to 5-1. Junior Kristina Thorson pitched a scoreless sixth inning.

California returns to action Friday against Delaware State (5 p.m. PST) and host Hawai`i (9 p.m.) on day No. 2 of the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament.
