Stanford Men's Tennis Competes At Pacific Coast Doubles Championship

March 4, 2005

La Jolla, Calif. - Four Stanford tennis doubles tandems competed in main draw action at the 116th annual Pacific Coast Doubles Championship at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club on Friday afternoon. Three of the Cardinal duos advanced with wins before play was cut short due to rain.

The No. 2 ranked doubles tandem of senior Sam Warburg and junior KC Corkery had a bye into Round of 64 play as one of the tournament's No. 1 seeds. The duo dispatched the team of Blake Meister and Eric Oijala of UC San Diego in second round play, 6-0, 6-2.

Sophomores Eric McKean and James Wan won their first round match, defeating familiar opponents in Matt Rubenstein and Kavi Sud of William & Mary 6-0, 6-0. The Cardinal defeated William & Mary in a dual match at Taube Tennis Center earlier this week.

The tandem of senior Phil Sheng and freshman Phil Kao also advanced in the main draw with a three-set win over the independent team of Marty Davis and Chris Dunk. The Cardinal duo split the first two sets with their opponents before winning the tiebreaker to close out the match, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (10).

The duo of junior Jon Wong and sophomore David Ryan was the only Stanford pairing to suffer a first round defeat, falling to Arizona's Bruno Alcala and Daniel Andras 7-6, 6-2.

All four Stanford tandems will continue main draw and consolation draw action at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club on Saturday morning.
