Anjelica Selden Tosses No-Hitter as UCLA Defeats St. John's, 3-0
March 5, 2005
FRESNO, CA - UCLA freshman pitcher Anjelica Selden allowed just one baserunner while throwing her first career no-hitter on Saturday afternoon at the Bulldog Classic in Fresno, Calif. UCLA improves to 14-5 on the season as the Bruins defeated St. John's 3-0.
Selden allowed just one base runner in the game as the Red Storm's Jillian Sandoval reached base on a strikeout-wild pitch with two outs in the top of the fifth inning. For the game, she had 15 strikeouts and did not walk or hit a batter in her first career no-hitter, the 91st no-hitter in UCLA softball history.
Offensively for the Bruins, UCLA opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Andrea Duran drew a one-out walk, advanced to third base on a single by Jodie Legaspi and scored on a sacrifice fly to deep right field by Emily Zaplatosch.
In the second inning, the Bruin added a second run as Jen Schroeder put a one-out single through the left side of the St. John's infield to start a one-out rally. That single was followed by singles from Ashley Herrera and Tara Henry to load the bases. Caitlin Benyi flied out to right field, but it was not deep enough to score a run, but Andrea Duran grounded into an infield error, allowing Schroeder to score.
A third and final run was plated in the sixth inning as Henry drew a one-out walk, went to third on a double by Benyi and scored on a sacrifice fly by Duran to complete the scoring with UCLA leading 3-0.
The Bruins complete their Bulldog Classic schedule on Sunday with an 11 am game against Santa Clara and a 3 pm scheduled first pitch against tournament host Fresno State. All games will be played at Fresno State's Bulldog Diamond.
