Aztecs Upset Women's Tennis, 5-2
March 5, 2005
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - It was a tough end to a trying weekend for the Husky women's tennis team this afternoon, as they suffered a 5-2 loss to the San Diego State Aztecs. The No. 68 Aztecs (7-3) are on the rise, having defeated three straight ranked opponents, and caught the eighth-ranked Huskies (10-2) coming off the early morning conclusion of their rain-delayed dual with the San Diego Toreros.
After completing this morning's 5-1 win over the Toreros, which was carried over from Friday, the Huskies quickly headed to the SDSU Tennis Stadium where the Aztecs awaited. Washington played without the services of 37th-ranked junior Dinka Hadzic this weekend, losing their No. 2 singles player and shaking up the doubles line-up.
Washington's top two doubles teams on the day had both never played a match together. Senior Dea Sumantri and freshman Tara Simpson had no problem creating chemistry, however, posting an 8-0 win over Indra Erichsen and Andrea Hermansen. But the Aztecs responded with wins at second and third doubles to clinch the point.
The Aztecs were just too good today in singles, easily taking the fourth through sixth singles matches. SDSU's Elisa Krausova defeated Simpson, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Erichsen knocked off UW's Allison Rainey, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5, and Nina Spaeth outplayed junior Stephanie Svanfeldt, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
At No. 1 singles, fifth-ranked Sumantri won her fifth straight match and second of the day, 6-4, 6-2, over Alesya Vidov. Sophomore Saskia Nauenberg turned in a perfect weekend, contributing a 6-2, 6-4 win at third singles on the heels of her win against the Toreros. But senior Mugette Ahn ran out of gas in her third-set super-tiebreak, as Dita Hauerlandova swept the tiebreak to win their No. 2 singles match after the Aztecs had already clinched the win.
The Huskies will need to quickly regroup as next weekend will feature a pair of Pac-10 matches against UCLA and USC. On Friday, March 11, the Huskies host the No. 11 Bruins for a noon match, then take on the No. 12 Trojans on Saturday, March 12, also at noon. Both matches will be held at the Bill Quillian Stadium, weather permitting.
