Cardinal Softball Drop 6-1 Contest To Northwestern At Worth Invite

Fullerton, Calif. - No. 23 Northwestern handed the third-ranked Stanford softball team only its second loss on the season tonight at the Worth Invitational in Fullerton, Calif. with a 6-1 final. The Cardinal drop to 17-2 on the season while the Wildcats improve to 13-5.
The Wildcats got on the board early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first.
Stanford got one back in the top of the second when Tricia Aggabao started things off with a double down the rightfield line with one out. Becky McCullough followed with a hard single that went off the pitcher to put runners on the corners. A ground out move McCullough to second. A passed ball brought Aggabao home to score.
Northwestern scored two more in the bottom of the third off a towering homerun by third baseman Kristen Amegin to make it 4-1.
The Wildcats added one more run in the bottom of the fifth and tacked on another in the sixth to make it 6-1.
Junior Laura Severson (8-2) took the loss for Stanford, allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits over five innings of work with five strikeouts. Eileen Canney (8-2) picked up the win for Northwestern scattering three hits over seven innings with four strikeouts.
Stanford wraps up play at the Worth Invitational with a 1:30 p.m. game against host-Cal State Fullerton tomorrow afternoon.
