Maxwell, Bullpen Combine on Four-Hitter

March 5, 2005

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Anton Maxwell and three relievers combined to pitch a four-hitter as Oregon State beat California-Riverside 5-2 in non-conference baseball Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Jacoby Ellsbury had an infield single to extend his hitting streak to 14 games over two seasons for OSU (10-2 overall).

OSU and UC-Riverside (8-9) conclude their series Sunday at 1 p.m. The game can be heard on www.osubeavers.com.

On Saturday, Maxwell gave up back-to-back doubles by Brett Bigler and Andrew Martinez to start the game, and a wild pitch later in the inning made it 2-0. The Highlanders would get only two hits and advance one runner as far as second base after that point in front of a crowd of 1,179.

'Obviously the pitching was good again today,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'We made some defensive plays we had to make, we got a couple of timely hits ... we've just got to get a little more consistent at the plate, but it's nice to even the series up.'

Maxwell, Jake McCormick, Nate Fogle and Kevin Gunderson combined to allow one walk and strike out six as the Beavers lowered their team earned run average to 2.14 this spring. Maxwell improved to 2-0 this season as the sophomore lefthander worked 5 1/3 innings.

'I expect them to always come out and do a good job, and they always do,' said OSU catcher Mitch Canham. 'I like catching Anton; he relaxes in the game and plays really well.'

After squandering opportunities in the first and second innings, the Beavers took the lead in the third. After Chris Campos led off with a walk and Shea McFeely singled up the middle, Joey Ledesma doubled just inside first base to drive in one run and Mike Lissman's grounder drove in the tying run with Lissman reaching on an error on the play. Darwin Barney's groundout then drove in another run to make it 3-2.

Oregon State added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth. Ledesma singled through the left side to start the inning, then Chris Kunda reached base on a two-out error. Canham drove them both home with a triple to centerfield to make it 5-2.

OSU had seven hits, with Ledsema's 2-for-2 game the Beavers' only multi-hit effort.

'I still think we left a lot of zeroes on the board,' Canham said of the OSU's day at the plate. 'For what we can do, we have a lot better stuff coming. Being at home, maybe it's relaxing us a little bit. When we're on the road, we want to tear everybody apart ... We've got the guys who will have that mental approach to come out and win; I think that loss Friday (by a 3-2 score) kind of kicked us in the rear end.'

Canham, who is learning the catching position after coming to Oregon State as an infielder, threw out his first baserunner attempting to steal when he caught Matt Cunningham in the top of the fifth inning.

'I don't think anybody had run on me yet because the pitchers keep them off base,' grinned Canham, who admits that he is gaining confidence in the position. 'It's just relaxing and knowing I can do it, and then letting that carry over into the game. Relaxing is the biggest thing ... you can't go out there all stiff. It's like trying to hit when you're trying to muscle up - it's just not going to happen.'

For UC-Riverside, starter Haley Winter went seven innings and allowed five runs (two earned) on seven hits and four walks while striking out three. Bigler was 2-for-4 with a double for the Highlanders.
