No. 11 Beavers Win Again, Which Makes 10 Straight
March 4, 2005
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The OSU gymnastics team (13-3) took first in the annual Salbasgeon Suites Invitational knocking off No. 9 Iowa State (11-2), No. 22 Washington (10-6) and UC Davis (7-11) Friday night at Gill Coliseum in front of a crowd of 3,087. With excellent gymnastics displayed by all four teams, the Beavers hung on in the end outscoring the Cyclones 195.525-195.100.
The victory for the Beavers extends their winning streak to ten. In the process of upsetting No. 9 Iowa State and defeating No. 22 Washington for the third time this season, the Beavers topped the 195-point plateau for the fifth consecutive meet.
Oregon State got off to a solid start scoring 48.900 on vault to get the meet started. The Beavers' yurchenko vaulters again made excellent landings with Yuki Lamb setting a season-high with a 9.925 to win the title and Megan Devencenzi hitting for a 9.850 to finish third. The Beavers, ranked 13th on the vault, also had solid contributions from Angela Morales with 9.725 and Heather Justus and Daylee Ingalls each posted 9.700.
On the bars, Chelsea Plourde led the Beavers finishing second on the apparatus with an outstanding score of 9.850. The rest of the 11th-ranked bars squad enjoyed a solid night with a 9.800 from Lindsay Nelson, a pair of 9.775's from Heidi Goehring and Chrissy Lamun, and Ingalls' 9.650.
As it has all season, OSU's 8th-ranked beam team was sturdy in its six performances with no gymnast scoring lower than 9.750. The Beavers posted their second-highest beam score of the season with a 40.100 topping all of Friday's competitors on the event by over a half point. Sweeping the beam awards, Lamun won the beam title for the fourth time this season and tied a season-high with a 9.875, Goehring's season-high 9.850 took second, and Plourde hit for a solid 9.825. Ingalls and Courtney Dennison added 9.775's and Morales tacked on a score of 9.750.
The floor team for OSU had its share of problems Friday night with a fall and an out of bounds deduction, but solid performances by seniors Videan and Justus who posted scores of 9.900 and 9.850 respectively. Morales contributed with a 9.750 and Devencenzi scored 9.650. Goehring added a 9.525 for the Beavers. Meanwhile, with Oregon State struggling on the floor, Iowa State was playing catch-up. However, a fall by bars anchor Erin Dethloff accompanied shortly after by Thérèse Videan's excellent routine sealed the deal for the Beavers running their winning streak to ten.
The Beavers have a bye next week, but will prepare for their trip to Arkansas, March 19. At Fayetteville, OSU faces the No. 13 Razorbacks, along with No. 1 Nebraska and No. 4 UCLA in a quad meet.
