No. 17 Penn State Gymnasts Defeat ASU, 195.55-194.35 Friday In Tempe

The No. 17 Penn State University women's gymnastics team defeated Arizona State University, 195.55-194.35 Friday in front of 840 fans at Wells Fargo Arena. ASU's record fell to 6-6 in its final home meet of the season. The meet featured the final home appearance of lone senior Kari Muth (Mesa, Ariz.).

The Sun Devils, who have battled injuries all season, were without the services of freshmen Karissa Vossler (knee) and Taryn Shockley (arm) while junior Lauren Powell (ankle) was limited to three events.

Cassandra Jusino of ASU won the all-around competition, scoring 39.25. Penn State's Kristal Uzelac, took second (39.175). Junior Ashley Kelly of ASU was third (39.025).

On vault, Kelly and Jennifer Orlando of Penn State tied for first (9.875). Jusino tied a season-best with a 9.825 and tied for third with PSU's Meredith Hoover and Kate Stopper. ASU posted a 48.625 on vault, its second-best score of the season. The Nittany Lions scored 49.0 on vault.

PSU's Kristal Uzelac took event honors on the uneven bars with a 9.925. Kelly placed second (9.9). Jusino, April Boone and Lauren Powell each posted a 9.825 for ASU. Powell's score tied a season-high. ASU recorded a 49.075 on bars while Penn State scored 48.75.

Uzelac won her second event of the night and placed first on balance beam (9.85) while Corissa Pirkl of Penn State took second (9.825). ASU had to count two falls on beam and posted a 47.825, its second-lowest beam score in 2005. PSU scored 48.875.

Kelly took first-place honors on the floor exercise with a 9.9. Stopper and Lisa Clark of PSU tied for second with 9.85's. Jusino and Boone of ASU tied for fourth with 9.825's. The Nittany Lions scored 48.925 on floor while ASU posted a 48.825.

The Sun Devils next compete against the University of Minnesota Saturday, March 12 for a dual meet beginning at 7:00 p.m. CT.
