No. 3 Cardinal Blank Boston College 8-0 At Worth Invite

Fullerton, Calif. - Freshman third baseman Michelle Smith went 2-for-3 with two homeruns to lead the third-ranked Stanford softball team to an 8-0 win over Boston College at the Worth Invitational in Fullerton, Calif. this afternoon. The Cardinal improve to 17-1 on the year.
Stanford got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the second inning when Leah Nelson led off with a single. Meghan Sickler reached on an error to put runners at first and second. After a double play, Erin Howe singled to left. Designated player Anna Beardman the hit an RBI single to score Sickler.
In the bottom of the third, Michelle Smith hit a solo shot to center to put the Cardinal up, 2-0.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Beardman doubled to left centerfield. On a head's up play, Beardman scored on a single by Catalina Morris.
The flood gates opened in the bottom of the fifth as Stanford scored five runs. Lauren Lappin singled up the middle then stole second to get things started for the Cardinal. Smith hit her second homerun of the game to make the score 5-0. Leah Nelson singled to centerfield to keep the hit parade going. Pinch hitter Heather Shook reached base on an error by the third baseman, moving Nelson to second. With one out on the board, an error by the shortstop loaded the bases with Erin Howe at first. Beardman singled to bring home Nelson and Shook. A sacrifice fly to rightfield by Catalina Morris sent Howe home and ended the game with an 8-0 victory for Stanford.
Starting pitcher Lauren Nydam (6-0) picked up the win for Stanford, throwing a one-hit shutout over five innings of work. Michelle Daly took the loss for Boston College, allowing five runs on 10 hits over four innings of work.
Stanford is back on the field tonight against Northwestern at 6 p.m.
