Softball Splits In Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS-- The 14th-ranked Washington softball team split a pair of games today at the Las Vegas Classic. The Huskies defeated Illinois-Chicago, 8-5, in the opener, before falling to 11th-ranked Oklahoma, 8-1, in the nightcap. Washington is 11-6 on the season, while UIC dips to 7-10 and OU improves to 19-4.

The Huskies continue tournament action tomorrow with games against Long Beach State at 11:15 am and host UNLV at 3:45 pm.


The Huskies used nine hits, including a pair of home runs to upend Illinois-Chicago 8-5 this morning to open the Las Vegas Classic. Kristen Rivera hit her seventh home run of the season to being her just eight home runs away from the UW career record (73).

UIC struck first, scoring two runs in the first inning on one hit.

The Huskies answered in the bottom half of the frame, scoring three runs on Rivera's home run. The shot cleared the secondary fence and landed in the parking lot behind the stadium.

The Flames knotted the score at 3-3 in the second inning on an error by the left fielder.

The score remained tied through five and a half innings, before the Huskies scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Ashley Charters led off the rally with a bunt single and took second base on the play. Sarah Hyatt doubled to left field to score Charters and Aimee Minor belted her fourth home run of the season to put UW on top, 6-3.

Illinois-Chicago responded in the top of the sixth with two runs on three hits. The Flames put runners on first and second on a fielder's choice and single to trigger a UW pitching change. Joyce Cathey then drove in a run with a single to left field and Cameron Astiazaran hit a RBI-single up the middle to cut Washington's lead to 6-5.

The Huskies closed the door with a pair of insurance runs in the sixth. Lauren Greer and Charters hit back-to-back singles through the left side of the infield and Rivera ripped a double down the left field line to give Washington the eventual 8-5 victory.

Freshman Caitlin Noble (4-3) earned the win as she scattered six hits over 5.1 innings, while striking out seven. Senior Ashley Boek picked up her first save of the year.

Oklahoma scored three runs in the first inning and never relinquished the lead, cruising to the 8-1 victory over Washington. The Sooners, who out hit the Huskies 14-5, have won 17 games in a row.

Oklahoma opened the game with three consecutive singles. Heather Scaglione drove in a run with a ground out to the right side and two more runs score on a Jamie Fox double down the right field line.

The Huskies got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when Sarah Hyatt doubled and pinch runner Jessica Wilkinson scored on a Sooner error.

OU added another run in the fifth when Kristin Vesely hit a lead off double and scored on a high chopper over the second baseman.

Oklahoma tacked on four more runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Kami Keiter led off the inning with a double off the right field wall and Stacia Aleman followed with a single off the third baseman. Vesley singled to left field to score Keiter and a double by Christina Enea scored two more. Scaglione then singled to center to score Enea and give the Sooners the 8-1 lead.

Keiter (9-1) struck out the side in the seventh to earn her ninth win of the season. She held UW to five hits and struck out seven.

Boek (7-3) took the loss as she gave up 14 hits, while striking out eight

Rivera finished the day going 4-for-6 with five RBIs. Charters went 3-for-6 with three runs scored.
