UCLA Tops Oregon, 73-61

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Freshman Josh Shipp matched his career high with 20points, Michael Fey had 15 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots, and UCLAenhanced its NCAA tournament chances by beating Oregon 73-61 Saturday to finishthe regular season on a four-game winning streak.

The Bruins (18-9, 11-7 Pac-10) haven't played in the NCAA tournament since2002. Sixty of the last 61 Pac-10 teams to finish the season with at least 11wins against league opponents were selected.

The Bruins finished tied for third in the Pac-10 with Stanford, but will beseeded fourth in the conference tournament since they were swept by theCardinal. UCLA faces face fifth-seeded Oregon State in a first-round gameThursday at Staples Center.

Arron Afflalo scored 11 points and Dijon Thompson and Jordan Farmar added 10each for the Bruins. Thompson, a senior and UCLA's leading scorer, was playinghis last game at Pauley Pavilion. He also had 12 rebounds to lead his team to a42-22 advantage in that department.

By losing, Oregon (14-13, 6-12) failed to qualify for the eight-teamconference tournament. The youthful Ducks, who started 9-1 before losing 12 oftheir last 17, have five freshmen, six sophomores and two juniors on theirroster.

Aaron Brooks led the Ducks with 18 points and five assists. ChamberlainOguchi added 12 points - all in the second half - and Bryce Taylor scored 10.

A 3-pointer by Afflalo, two free throws by Thompson and a basket by Fey gavethe Bruins a 48-33 lead with 15:20 remaining.

It was 54-40 when the Ducks got a basket from Jordan Kent and two fast-breakdunks by Oguchi to draw within eight points with 8{ minutes left. But that wasas close at Oregon would get.

Thompson and Shipp scored four points each during an 8-3 run that made it62-49 with 5:55 to play, and Farmar made six free throws in the final twominutes to keep the Bruins safely ahead.

Fey scored seven points and Shipp added six during a 13-6 run that gave UCLAa 24-18 lead before the Ducks used a basket by Malik Hairston and 3-pointers byTaylor and Brooks to tie the game 26-all.

With Fey and Farmar scoring four points each, the Bruins went on a 12-2 runto finish the first half for a 38-28 lead. The Ducks weren't closer than eightpoints after that.

Brian Morrison and Josiah Johnson, who usually come off the bench, were inthe starting lineup as UCLA seniors playing their final home game. Theyreplaced Fey and Shipp.

UCLA and Oregon State split their two games this season. The Bruins used agame-finishing 10-0 run to beat the Beavers 69-61 Thursday night at PauleyPavilion, and OSU won the first game 85-80 in Corvallis.
