Golfers to Play in Three Events over 10 Days
March 6, 2005
The 11th-ranked UCLA men's golf team will hit the road for three events over 10 days, traveling locally to Beaumont and Irvine and out of state to Las Vegas.
On Mar. 7 & 8, the Bruin Blue Team will participate in the UC Riverside Braveheart tournament at the SCPGA Golf Course in Beaumont. The SCPGA course is the site where the Bruins won the Gold Rush in September to start the season. The course plays to a par of 72 over 7,303 yards.
On Mar. 11-13, the UCLA Gold Team travels to the Las Vegas Founders event at Southern Highlands Golf Course. Last season, the Bruins tied for sixth at this event. The course plays 7,510 yards with a par of 72.
Finally, on Mar. 14 & 15, the Blue Team visits the Santa Ana Country Club for the UC Irvine Anteater Invitational. The Bruins are the defending champions, winning last year by 10 shots. Santa Ana CC plays to a par of 72 over 6,536 yards.
One of the pleasant surprises recently on the UCLA team has been the emergence of sophomore Joakim Renstrom, who has recorded a pair of Top 10 finishes in his last three events. In his first 11 rounds of the season, Renstrom was averaging 75.6. In his last eight rounds, he has averaged 70.8, nine-under par. He also posted his career best collegiate round of 66 (-6) at the TaylorMade Classic.
Senior John Poucher, an all-conference member last season, continues to be the most consistent player on the UCLA team. Through 17 rounds, Poucher leads the team in scoring at 73.0. He has placed among the Top 20 individuals in five of six events.
