No. 15 California Defeats Arizona, 4-2

March 6, 2005

Tucson, Ariz. - The No. 15 California women's tennis team (6-3) defeated No. 49 Arizona (5-5) at the Robson Tennis Center. The match had begun Saturday, March 5, but rain and lightning in the Tucson area caused the match to be postponed.

Arizona tallied the doubles point on Saturday before play was postponed, winning matches on courts one and three. Court two, pitting Stephanie Kusano and Jessica Shu against Stephanie Balzert and Kasia Jakowlew, did not complete its match. California led the match 8-7, but with Arizona having already won the doubles point, the match was suspended once the rains came down.

Cal clinched the victory in singles play, where the Bears captured four victories. No. 7 Suzi Babos improved to 8-1 in dual matches on court one, where she defeated Maja Mlakar, 6-1; 6-1. Freshman Stephanie Kusano came away with her second consecutive win on court three, beating Stephanie Balzert, 6-1; 6-2.

Junior co-captain Jessica Shu notched her 15th win of the season, defeating Jakowlew, 6-1; 6-4, on court five. Cristina Visico won Cal's fourth singles match on court six, defeating Camelia Todorova in straight sets, 6-0; 6-1.

The Golden Bears host the University of the Pacific Wednesday, March 9 at 2:30 p.m.
