OSU Scores Five In Eighth For Win

March 6, 2005

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State used a five-run eighth inning to beat UC-Riverside 7-2 in non-conference baseball Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Andy Jenkins had a two-run single in the eighth inning and was 3-for-4 for the Beavers (11-2 overall), while Jacoby Ellsbury was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in to extend his hitting streak to 15 games over two seasons.

OSU now goes to the Pepperdine Tournament to face Cal State-Northridge on Friday, Pepperdine on Saturday and Winthrop on Sunday. All three games can be heard on www.osubeavers.com.

On Sunday against the Highlanders (8-10), Oregon State starter Jonah Nickerson and relievers Kevin Joslyn, Nate Fogle and Kevin Gunderson combined on a five-hitter, allowing one earned run to drop the Beavers' team earned run average to 2.05. A crowd of 1,137 was still in suspense until OSU broke the game open in the eighth.

The Beavers left eight runners in scoring position in the first seven innings, hitting the ball hard a number of times in those situations but lining out.

'I don't think it was very pretty,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'We sure squandered a lot of opportunities in the ballgame. I think a little frustration set in, then we got a little tight. They're a good club; fortunately for us, we kept running guys out to the mound who kept getting it done. Nickerson was good, especially when we didn't help him any.

'It's tough when you have a chance to score inning after inning and don't get it done. Then to come back and win, hopefully that will get us going a little bit.'

Against UCR righthander Taylor Bills in the eighth, a walk, a Darwin Barney single and an error loaded the bases with one out. With pinch-hitter Mike Lissman at the plate, Bills was called for a balk - his third of the game - to plate the go-ahead run.

Anthony Claggett relieved Bills at that point and allowed run-scoring singles to Lissman and Tyler Graham, and Jenkins capped the inning with his two-run single for a 7-2 lead. That helped alleviate some of OSU's earlier frustration.

'The story of the game was not getting runners in from third base,' said Ellsbury, who upped his batting average this spring to .472. 'We hit the ball hard, we just didn't hit any flies to bring somebody in. We broke out in the eighth inning and got some runs, and it was a good win for us.

'Our pitchers are doing an awesome job. We can't ask anything more from them. We'll just keep on swinging the bats and work on doing some things that we didn't do right this weekend.'

OSU had gone in front 1-0 in the bottom of the third when Ellsbury singled hard off Bills' shin to drive in Mitch Canham from second. UCR threatened to take the lead in the top of the fourth when it loaded the bases with none out against Nickerson on a strikeout/passed ball, an error on a potential double-play ball and a bunt single. Nickerson then got a pair of strikeouts but a wild pitch allowed the tying run to score before he could retire the final hitter.

'That was one of the keys, when we gave them a couple of extra runners and they only got one run out of it,' Casey said. 'Jonah bowed his neck and was real good, and that was a big key.'

Ellsbury returned the lead to OSU at 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh with a run-scoring double that drove Graham in from first base. The Highlanders again evened the game in the next half-inning when Nick Salotti led off with a double and eventually scored on Matt Cunningham's sacrifice fly.

Nickerson lowered his ERA to 0.86 in 21 innings of work this season by not allowing an earned run in 6 1/3 innings on Sunday, allowing just two hits and walking three while striking out seven. Fogle got the win to improve to 2-1 for 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
