Slovic And Chu Help Huskies Hold Off Aztecs
March 6, 2005
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Alex Slovic pulled away for a win in the third set of his No. 2 singles match, leading the Husky men's tennis team to a 4-3 win over San Diego State today. This was the first road match of the season for the No. 21 Huskies (10-2) and the tight match featured a whopping seven tiebreaks in the six singles matches.
Trailing the Aztecs 3-2, sophomore Daniel Chu kept the Husky hopes alive, pulling off an upset of 84th-ranked Dontia Hayes in a third set tiebreak at No. 4 singles. Chu took the third set 7-5 in the breaker. 25th-ranked sophomore Slovic then stepped up to quash the Aztec upset bid. Slovic took the first set of his No. 2 singles match with Armando Carrascosa in a tiebreak, but Carrascosa responded with his own tiebreak win in set number two. Slovic came right back though, routing the Aztec 6-0 in the third set for his biggest dual win of the year.
Senior Peter Scharler provided UW's first singles win, downing Eugenio Romero at sixth singles, 6-4, 6-1. Scharler improves to 10-1 in dual play. Two different Huskies suffered losses in two tiebreaks. Senior Alex Vlaski was upset by Benedikt Stronk at No. 1 singles, losing 7-5 in the first set tiebreak and 11-9 in the second. Senior Christoph Palmanshofer lost his first dual match of the year after ten straight wins, losing a pair of tiebreaks 7-4 and 7-3 at No. 3 singles. Freshman Andy Kuharszky was defeated in straight sets at fifth singles.
The deciding factor proved to be doubles play, where the Huskies scored the point thanks to wins in the second and third positions. Kuharszky and Slovic won their eighth match in a row, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles, while Palmanshofer and Mike Ricks posted an 8-4 win in the No. 3 slot. Carrascosa and Stronk took the No. 1 doubles match, 8-6, over Vlaski and Chu.
Tomorrow the Huskies remain in San Diego to take on the San Diego Toreros for a 1:30 match.
