Arizona State Named SEBaseball.com National Team Of The Week

TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Following a perfect 3-0 weekend at the Keith LeClair Classic that included wins over No. 4 North Carolina, East Carolina and Ohio State, the Arizona State baseball team has been named the National Team of the Week by SEBaseball.com.
The Sun Devils have won five of their last six games to climb over the .500 mark at 11-10 and recently concluded a stretch of nine straight games against teams ranked in the national top 10. ASU has played 13 of its 21 games against teams that have appeared in the national rankings at some point this season and will face another stiff test this weekend with a pair of games against No. 5 LSU.

Junior All-American outfielder Travis Buck continued his hot hitting going 5-for-14 (.357) with three doubles and two RBI in the tournament... he has a current six-game hitting streak in which he is hitting .464 (13-for-28) with nine runs, three doubles, one home run and eight RBI... he has recorded multiple hits in five of the last six games to raise his season batting average from .246 to .315 (28-for-89)... senior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch is hitting .400 (8-for-20) with eight RBI over his last six games... freshman designated hitter Willy Fox has hits in four of his five starts with three home runs and 11 RBI... senior first baseman Jeff Larish recorded four RBI over the weekend and now has 187 in his career... he also blasted his team-leading fifth home run of the season and has 33 in his career... sophomore Colin Curtis recorded six walks and was also hit by a pitch over the weekend... he continues to lead the Pac-10 with 19 walks... the Sun Devils were without the services of senior 3B Joey Hooft, who sat out for the second straight weekend with a hamstring injury... redshirt freshman Jeff Landry (2 games) and true freshman Eric Sogard (1 game) started in place of Hooft (.327-4 2B-6 RBI)... sophomore RHP Pat Bresnehan twirled six shutout innings against Ohio State to pick up his first win of the season... he lasted a career-high six innings in his third start of the year (fourth of his career) and lowered his ERA to a team-leading 3.12... junior LHP Erik Averill picked up his third win over the year with 6.1 strong innings against East Carolina (6.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K)... his four walks were more than his previous season total in five starts (3)... Averill is second on the team with a 3.52 ERA and has struck out 36 batters in 38.1 IP... he has lasted five or more innings in five of his six starts... sophomore RHP Zechry Zinicola allowed only three hits and struck out five in his third start of the year against No. 4 North Carolina... in three starts this season he is 0-1 with a 2.81 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 16.0 IP.

The Sun Devils were a perfect 3-0 over the weekend to improve to 11-10 overall... the Devils have won three straight games and five of their last six after enduring a six-game losing streak... ASU started the weekend with an impressive 4-3 win over No. 4 North Carolina to improve to 4-8 against ranked opponents... the squad has played 13 of their 21 games against teams who have been ranked at some time this season in the national polls... ASU played back-to-back extra inning games for the first time since 2003 with Friday's 4-3 win in 11 innings... freshmen DJ Butler (DH), Greg Bordes (2B) and Jeff Landry (3B) earned their first career starts over the weekend... ASU has now started six true freshman and two redshirt freshman position players this season... 11th year head coach Pat Murphy has used his 17 different starting batting lineups and 13 different positional lineups in the first 21 games this season... ASU scored 13 of its 17 runs in the tournament with two outs... ASU was also the only team in the six-team tournament (East Carolina, Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan, North Carolina) to go undefeated... the Sun Devils hit only .210 (21-for-100) in the pitching-dominated tournament, but held opponents to an even less .160 (16-for-100) mark... ASU made the most of its 17 runs coming on only 21 hits, including a pair of home runs from Tuffy Gosewisch and Jeff Larish in the 10-3 win over ECU... the pitching staff dominated with a 1.55 ERA, giving up only five earned runs in 29.0 innings... for the season the Sun Devils are hitting .278 (204-for-733) with 37 doubles, six triples, 11 home runs and a .362 on-base percentage... the squad is 39-for-55 stealing bases... the pitching staff has been steadily improving over the last six games to lower the team ERA from 5.57 to its current mark of 4.53... over that stretch of games the pitchers have recorded an impressive 2.05 ERA with only 13 earned runs given up in the last 57. 0 IP.... ASU's five-run first inning vs. ECU tied a season high for the highest scoring inning of the year... the Sun Devils improved to 5-1 this season when wearing their white shoes and 4-1 when wearing their home white uniforms... the Sunday win over Ohio State broke a five-game losing streak on Sunday's... the Sun Devils faced their seventh preseason All-American pitcher on Friday night in UNC LHP Andrew Miller... ASU will end a seven-game road trip this weekend in Baton Rouge, La., and end a stretch of 15 of the last 18 games away from Packard Stadium... ASU will also have played 14 of their first 25 games against a ranked opponent (11 against top 10 teams).
