March 6, 2005

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The No. 2 California softball team defeated No. 7 Alabama, 7-0, in the title game of the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament and Delaware State in the semifinals, 12-1, on Sunday.

The Bears (18-1) swept all seven games at the tournament and their current nine-game winning streak matches a season high. Catcher Haley Woods was named tournament MVP after batting 10-for-23 with 12 RBIs, a pair of doubles and four home runs. Joining her on the all-tournament team was pitcher Kristina Thorson, who went 3-0 with 24 strikeouts against two earned runs and left fielder Lindsay James, who batted 12-for-27 and scored seven runs.

Against the Crimson Tide, whom Cal defeated, 3-2, on Saturday, starter Kelly Anderson (6-1) tossed a one-hitter and struck out seven.

The Bears scored the only run they would need in the bottom of the first as second baseman Jessica Pamanian's sacrifice fly scored James. The Bears added three runs in the third on a two-run double by James and an RBI single from center fielder Kaleo Eldredge en route to victory.

In the semifinals against Delaware State, Cal starter Kristina Thorson pitched a two-hitter and struck out 10 to improve to 8-0.

Third baseman Jeana Gevas, designated player Emily Friedman and right fielder Kristen Bayless all had two RBIs. Woods swatted a three-run homer, her sixth of the year, to highlight a six-run Bears' sixth.

Cal returns to action March 11-13 at the National Invitational Tournament in Sunnyvale, Calif. The Bears square off against Santa Clara (4 p.m.) and Princeton (6 p.m.) before continuing bracket play on Saturday and Sunday.
