Bears in Third After Two Rounds of Spartan Invitational

SALINAS, Calif. - Behind junior Sofie Andersson's school-record score of 135, California is in third place Tuesday after two rounds of the Spartan Invitational at Corral de Tierra Country Club. The Golden Bears are at 17-over 585 after carding rounds of 294 and 291.

UCLA leads the 15-team tournament at 579, just ahead of Washington (580). The Bruins clawed their way into the lead after firing a three-under 281 in the second round. Rounding out the top five is UNLV at 586 and UC Irvine at 588.

Andersson leads the individual competition by five shots after finishing the day at minus-seven, including tying the Cal 18-hole record of 67 in the second round. Sarah Huarte, the 2004 NCAA champion, posted a 67 on the par 72 NCAA course, while Andersson accomplished the feat today on a par 71 course. Andersson, a 2004 honorable mention All-American, sank seven birdies and knocked five strokes off the previous 36-hole Cal record of 140, set on several occasions. She is in pursuit of her first collegiate title after also leading the Lady Puerto Rico in February after the opening round.

UNLV's Elena Kurokawa is second, five shots behind with a two-under 140.

Cal junior Sophia Sheridan is tied for 10th at 146 on the strength of rounds of 72 and 74, respectively. Freshman Jen Sanders is off to her best start as a Golden Bear, standing in 28th at 151, including a personal-best round of 75 in the afternoon. Sophomore Mika Takayama is tied for 37th at 153. Senior Claire Dury is tied for 57th at 157.

The third and final round begins Wednesday morning at 8 a.m., with team teeing off on the 1st and 10th holes every nine minutes.
