SATURDAY MARCH 12
Oregon State at Mt. Hood Open;Gresham, Ore.; 10 a.m.(OSU vs. Portland, Portland Statein dual meet scoring)
Oregon State's rejuvenated women's track team will get its first taste of dual meet scoring when it takes on Portland and Portland State in the Mt. Hood Open on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Ore. The Beavers will be at a decided disadvantage against both the Pilots and Vikings, as OSU will compete only in the distance races while UP and PSU will also enter athletes in sprints and field events.
After opening the season last weekend at the Willamette Open, OSU head coach Kelly Sullivan will have the Beavers train differently this week in preparation for their upcoming meet.
'We are going to the track for the first time this week,' Sullivan said. 'We haven't done this yet and it will be interesting to see how the ladies respond, it could be good or bad. This is part of the steps we need to take to get them ready.'
OSU's runners will again be competing in the 800 meters and 1,500 meters, and will also enter a limited number of runners in the 3,000 meters.
'We are excited to get a shot to go up against Portland and Portland State,' Sullivan said. 'I don't know what kind of competition it will be, but there will clearly be a different type of runner there this weekend, which is always good.'
OREGON STATE'S LATEST MEET: Oregon State traveled to the Willamette Open in Salem, Ore., on March 5 to take on Clackamas Community College, George Fox, Willamette University, and the University of Oregon Running Club.
The Beavers split their squad to compete in the 1,500 and the 800 meters.
OSU started its season with a win in the 1,500 by freshman Jean-Marie Peterson, with a time of 4 minutes and 46.22 seconds. Peterson's win made it back-to-back victories - separated by 17 years - for the Beaver track program. OSU's last race on the track before the sport was dropped in 1988 was Karl Van Calcar's win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Championships.
The Beavers also had third place finishes in the 1,500 and the 800. OSU's Neoma Palmer finished third in the 1,500 with at time of 4:50.08, while Taylor Bryant finished third in the 800 with a time of 2:17.89 seconds.
'The main objective this weekend was to see where the girls are at after winter training,' Sullivan said. 'I liked the way they prepared. Every one of them said they were nervous and that they were anxious to find out how they were going to do. I felt they handled themselves very well.'
HEAD COACH KELLY SULLIVAN: Kelly Sullivan came to Oregon State in January, 2004 to re-start OSU's program after being head cross country and track and field coach at nearby Willamette University, a Division III school in Salem, Ore., since 1997. Sullivan was also an assistant coach at Auburn from 1984-96, and head coach at Clackamas Community College (Ore.) from 1980-84.
Sullivan, 47, guided Willamette's teams to three top-10 nationalfinishes in cross country and track and coached 23 All-Americans, including five individuals who won national championships. t Auburn, he coached 36 All-Americans and at Clackamas he coached 24 NCAA All-Americans.
Sullivan was an All-American in the steeplechase and cross country at Willamette before graduating in 1979 with a bachelor's degree in History and Education. A native of Nehalem, Ore., he graduated from Neah-Kah-Nie High.
OREGON STATE TAKES TO THE ROAD: Oregon State will spend at least the first season of its revived cross country and track programs without a home course or track. The Beavers ran in one meet in Corvallis during cross country season at the Oregon State Track Club Invitational, however they will remain on the road for all of their 2005 track season.
