UC Riverside Upsets No. 25/20 USC With 8-3 Win

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Matt Cunningham went 3-for-3 with two home runs and three RBI Tuesday as the UC Riverside Highlanders upset the No. 25/20 USC Trojans, 8-3, in nonconference action at the Riverside Sports Complex. The Highlanders evened the season series after the Trojans won 21-8 last week at Dedeaux Field.

Cunningham did the damage again and went a combined 5-for-7 with three home runs and 10 RBI in the two games against the Trojans.

Aaron Grant went 3-for-5 with a two-run double in the eighth as the Highlanders banged out 13 hits. Jaime Pedroza hit his first home run of the season with a solo shot in the fourth. Jose Shaw earned his first win of the season for UC Riverside (9-10) with 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

Senior Michael Friedman (1-1) took the loss for USC, which falls to 7-5 on the season. Friedman tied a career high with five strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings. Sophomore outfielder Cyle Hankerd went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Blake Sharpe also had two hits on the night for the Trojans.

USC hosts the 2005 Public Storage Baseball Classic this weekend featuring Texas Tech, UC Irvine and Wichita State. The tournament starts on Friday (March 11) with Wichita State taking on UC Irvine at 2 p.m. while USC plays Texas Tech at 6 p.m. All three games involving USC will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com with all six games utilizing Gametracker live stats.
