Beavers Take Third Straight Baseball Victory

March 11, 2005

MALIBU, Calif. - Dallas Buck and Kevin Gunderson combined to pitch a five-hitter for Oregon State in a 4-1 win over Cal State-Northridge in non-conference baseball Friday morning at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Beavers (12-2 overall) opened the Yellow Book USA Classic with their third straight win, and Jacoby Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to 16 games over two seasons.

OSU continues the tournament against host Pepperdine on Saturday at 2 p.m., then concludes the event against Winthrop on Sunday at 10 a.m. Both games can be heard on www.osubeavers.com.

Against Cal State-Northridge (6-7-1), Buck pitched into the ninth inning to improve his record to 3-0 this season, walking one and striking out eight while giving up four hits. The run he allowed was unearned, giving him 19 straight innings without allowing an earned run.

Gunderson picked up the save by recording the final three outs, allowing one hit. Oregon State's team earned run average to dipped to 1.90, and it was the 11th time this season that OSU has limited an opponent to three or fewer runs.

Matador righthander Joe Rocchio kept it a two-run game until the bottom of the eighth, though, as six of the seven runners stranded by the Beavers were in scoring position.

'Dallas pitched well,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'Once again, we squandered some great opportunities to score runs and take some pressure off our pitching, but we haven't been able to finish some innings, when we get baserunners in scoring position we haven't been able to score them. We've just got to do a better job offensively to win the games we've got to win.

'But we pitched today and we made some big plays after that tough inning where we made some errors, we turned some double plays and I thought we played really well up the middle.'

The Beavers got all the runs they'd need with two in the bottom of the first. OSU loaded the bases with none out on an infield single by Mitch Canham, a walk to Tyler Graham and a bunt single by Ellsbury, then Joey Ledesma lofted a sacrifice fly to left to plate Canham and Graham scored on an error on a pickoff try.

CSUN made it 2-1 in the top of the fourth. Buck hit John Voita with a pitch with two out, then the Beavers committed errors on three straight balls hit by the Matadors to send Voita home before Buck got a groundout to finish the inning with the lead intact.

The Beavers got the run back in the bottom of the fifth as Canham doubled to the wall in centerfield with two out and scored on Graham's single to center to push the lead to 3-1. OSU's final run came in the bottom of the eighth when Ledesma, Mike Lissman and Shea McFeely strung together consecutive one-out singles against Rocchio and reliever Peter Eberhardt.

The Matadors threatened on several other occasions, but had a runner caught in a rundown between second and third to end the fifth inning and grounded into double plays in the eighth and ninth.

Canham was 2-for-4 and scored twice for OSU, raising his batting average to .419 this season. Ellsbury, the Pac-10 batting leader going into the week, was also 2-for-4 and is now batting .474 while Darwin Barney was 2-for-3 and McFeely 2-for-4.

OSU's 12-2 record is its best through 14 games since a 12-1-1 start to the 1968 season. The Beavers gained mention in all four national polls this week, being ranked No. 22 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll, No. 23 by Baseball America magainze and No. 28 by both the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll and Collegiate Baseball newspaper.
