Tempe, AZ - The eighth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team (13-2) posted its ninth shutout of the season with a 7-0 victory over Arizona State (5-3) Friday afternoon at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Arizona.
UCLA, which avenges a 5-2 loss to the Sun Devils last season in Tempe marking only the second-ever victory for ASU in 57 total meetings, set the tone in doubles play with two early victories. The Bruins posted wins at the top two courts to take the one point awarded for doubles play. ASU was victorious at court No. 3.
Once singles play began, the Bruins increased their lead to 3-0 when Benjamin Kohlloeffel and Mathieu Dehaine both registered 6-3, 6-0 wins at court Nos. 1 and 6 respectively. Senior Alberto Francis clinched the match for UCLA at court No. 4 after his opponent, Andy Colombo, retired in their match. Francis had won the first set 6-4 and was up a break at 3-2 when the match was suspended.
Other straight-set winners for UCLA on the day were Kris Kwinta at court No. 2 and Philipp Gruendler at court No. 5. The closest match of the day came at court No. 3, where Chris Lam defeated Clint Letcher, 6-2, 6-7(3), (10-6).
UCLA's road trip continues tomorrow, as the Bruins will be in Tucson for a 1:00 p.m. showdown with the Arizona Wildcats.
