Cal Baseball Defeats UNLV, 13-2

BERKELEY, CA - California pounded out a season-high 18 hits and junior right-hander Adam Gold pitched seven solid innings, as the Golden Bears defeated UNLV, 13-2, Friday at Evans Diamond. Cal improved to 12-6 on the year, and the Rebels fell to 3-14.

The Bears scored five runs in the first three innings and later tacked on four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. Hitting stars for Cal included freshman second baseman Josh Satin, who was 4-for-4 with a RBI single in the third, a RBI double in the fifth and a RBI single in the sixth. Sophomore center fielder Brennan Boesch was 4-for-5 with a double, and senior third baseman Matt Einspahr was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer in the fifth and a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Mike Van Winden (2-for-6, RBI), Jeremy Burchett (2-for-3, RBI double) and Garrett Bussiere (2-for-4, RBI) added two hits apiece for the Bears.

Gold improved his season record to 2-2 by throwing 7.0 innings with three hits, two runs, two walks and five strikeouts. The losing pitcher for UNLV was starter Derek Rodriguez (0-3, 4.3 innings, 10 hits, eight runs, five earned runs, no walks, four strikeouts).

The Rebels actually had a lead to begin the game when Matt Fry had a RBI single off of Gold in the first inning. Cal then held UNLV in check until the sixth inning when Ryan Bird knocked a RBI double. For the day, Bear pitching limited the Rebels to six hits. Freshman Jason Corder (1.0 inning, two hits, no runs, no walks, two strikeouts) and senior Aaron Swick (1.0 inning, one hit, no runs) threw the last two innings for Cal.

Cal will next host UNLV in the second game of the three-game series, Saturday, Mar. 12 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
