No. 10 Bruins Defeat No. 12 Huskies, 5-2

SEATTLE - The No. 10-ranked UCLA women's tennis team took the doubles point and then won four of six matches in singles play to defeat No. 12 Washington, 5-2 Friday at Bill Quillian Stadium in Seattle. With the win, the Bruins improve to 7-4 overall and 1-1 in Pac-10 play. The Huskies fall to 10-3 and 1-1 in conference action.
The featured singles match of the day came at the No. 1 position, where sixth-ranked Dea Sumantri of Washington and No. 48 Daniela Bercek of UCLA faced off. The higher-ranked Sumantri survived the three-set battle, winning 6-0, 3-6, 6-0 to account for one of Washington's two points. The Huskies' other point came at court No. 6, where Allison Rainey was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Elizabeth Lumpkin.
Despite suffering losses at court Nos. 1 and 6, the Bruins managed to get the win with four victories in between. UCLA's Tracy Lin and Laura Gordon were both straight-set winners, as Lin defeated Saskia Nauenberg, 6-3, 6-1 at court No. 4, while Gordon posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Tara Simpson at court No. 5. Bruin sophomore Alex McGoodwin needed three sets to overcome Mugette Ahn at court No. 3, winning 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-4. The match was clinched at the No. 2 spot, as freshman Riza Zalameda rebounded from a difficult first set to defeat Dinka Hadzic, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
UCLA returns to action tomorrow, taking on Washington State in Pullman beginning at Noon.
