No. 10 Bruins Hold Off No. 12 Huskies, 5-2
March 11, 2005
SEATTLE, Wash. - The 12th-ranked Washington women's tennis team came up just short against No. 10 UCLA today at the Bill Quillian Stadium. The Huskies (10-3, 1-1 Pac-10) were in position to score the upset, but the Bruins (7-4, 1-1 Pac-10) held on in three sets at second and third singles to secure the win. Dea Sumantri led the Huskies with her sixth straight win at No. 1 singles.
UCLA took a 1-0 lead by sweeping doubles play. Sumantri and junior Dinka Hadzic were defeated, 8-4, at the top doubles spot by the third-ranked duo of Daniela Bercek and Riza Zalameda. The Huskies continue to struggle in doubles play, losing their past seven doubles points.
Freshman Allison Rainey came through for the first UW point of the match, winning 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 singles over UCLA's Elizabeth Lumpkin. Rainey, a Mercer Island native, improves to 10-3 in dual play.
The Bruins, NCAA runner-up last year, posted wins at fourth and fifth singles to pull ahead. In the first completed singles mach, Bruin Tracy Lin downed sophomore Saskia Nauenberg, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4. In the fifth singles spot, 83rd-ranked Laura Gordon scored a 6-3, 6-2 win over UW freshman Tara Simpson.
Sumantri, currently ranked sixth in the nation, pulled the Huskies closer by taking down 48th-ranked Daniela Bercek. Sumantri cruised through the first set, 6-0, but errors crept into her game in the second set and Bercek took the set, 6-3. Shrugging off the loss, Sumantri bounced right back in the third set, blanking the Bruin, 6-0, once again. The Husky senior recorded her 13th win over a ranked opponent.
With the Huskies trailing 3-2, the final two matches looked to be up for grabs. At No. 2 singles, 34th-ranked Hadzic had split the first two sets with 19th-ranked Zalameda and was even at 2-2 in the third set, when a series of unfortunate calls went against the Husky and Zalameda pulled away for a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 win to clinch the match for the Bruins. Senior Mugette Ahn had come back from a set down at third singles and led in the third set 3-0, but seemed to lose momentum once UCLA had secured the victory, and Alex McGoodwin fought back to take the match, 6-4, in the third.
Things won't get any easier for the Huskies, as the 13th-ranked USC Trojans visit Bill Quillian Stadium tomorrow, March 12, for a 12 p.m. conference match.
