UC Irvine Upsets No. 19 Wichita State, 9-4, At Public Storage Classic
March 11, 2005
LOS ANGELES - Third baseman Matt Anderson went 2-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI Friday as the UC Irvine Anteaters upset the No. 19 Wichita State Shockers, 9-4, in day one action at the 2005 Public Storage Baseball Classic at Dedeaux Field. The Anteaters scored five runs in the seventh to break a 4-4 tie.
Steve Schroer (2-2) got the win with three innings of relief for UC Irvine, which improves to 10-7 on the season. Schroer allowed one unearned run and struck out one. Noah Booth (2-1) took the loss for Wichita State (15-2), allowing four runs in just a third of an inning with two walks.
Both starting pitchers lasted six innings, but did not factor in the decision. Chris Nicoll scattered nine hits for UC Irvine, allowing three hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Wichita State standout Mike Pelfrey allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Shockers scored in the second when center fielder Kenny Waddell used a suicide squeeze bunt to plate Muich.
UC Irvine used a unique fashion to take the lead in the third. With runners at second and third, Pelfrey threw a wild pitch that scored UCI shortstop Chad Lundahl and moved second baseman Brett Dalton to third in tying the game. As Pelfrey stood at the plate and thinking that time had been called after Lundahl scored, Wichita State catcher Joe Muich flipped the ball to Pelfrey. Pelfrey was distracted and the ball sailed over his head, allowing Dalton to score the go-ahead run.
Wichita State scored twice in the sixth to take the lead. Muich hit his second home run of the season with a solo shot to left. Brandon Hall followed by being hit with a Nicoll pitch. Hall advanced on a bunt attempt by Waddell and scored on an RBI single up the middle by left fielder Phil Napolitan.
The Anteaters responded in the bottom of the inning when Anderson hit a two-run shot to right for his first homer. Anderson hit a three-run homer as part of the five-run seventh.
Nick McCoola hit a double in the ninth to extend his hitting streak to 15 games for the Shockers.
The 2005 Public Storage Baseball Classic continues tonight with USC hosting Texas Tech. The game will be broadcast on usctrojans.com, along with Gametracker live stats.
