Clement Slams Two Homers In 6-1 Win Over No. 23/21 Texas Tech

LOS ANGELES - Preseason junior All-America catcher Jeff Clement went 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI Friday as the No. 25/20 USC Trojans defeated the No. 23/21 Texas Tech Red Raiders, 6-1, in day one action at the 2005 Public Storage Baseball Classic at Dedeaux Field. UC Irvine upset No. 19 Wichita State, 9-4, earlier in the day.
USC improved to 8-5 on the season while Texas Tech falls to 14-4 overall.
Trojan sophomore standout Ian Kennedy (2-1) went 6 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on four hits with four walks and nine strikeouts. He did not allow a run until the seventh inning and registered six of his first nine outs via the strikeout.
Jack Spradlin retired four straight batters in 1 1/3 perfect innings in relief for the Trojans. USC pitchers allowed just five hits against a Texas Tech team that was hitting .352 prior to tonight's game.
Brian Wyatt (2-1) took the loss for the Red Raiders after giving up two runs in six innings. Wyatt allowed four hits, walking four and striking out three.
Clement's first home run in the first tied Jason Lane (1998-99) for fifth on USC's all-time list. He moved into fifth place alone with his second homer of the game, a two-run shot, over the scoreboard in right center in the seventh.
Clement hit his third and fourth home runs of the season with four homers in his last five games. It was also Clement's fifth career multi-homer game.
Third baseman Billy Hart capped a four-run seventh for the Trojans with his first homer of the season, hitting a two-run home run to left.
The 2005 Public Storage Baseball Classic continues tomorrow with Texas Tech facing UC Irvine at 1 p.m. and USC playing Wichita State at 5 p.m. Both games will have Gametracker live stats available on usctrojans.com with the USC game broadcast live.
