Erica McLain Wins Second All-American Honor

March 12, 2005

Fayetteville, Ar - For the second straight day, freshman Erica McLain is an All-American.

On Saturday at the 2005 NCAA Division I Men's & Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Arkansas, McLain finished second in the triple jump to earn her second All-American honor. On Friday, McLain finished eighth in the long jump to gain All-American status. McLain triple jumped 44-8 1/4 (13.62m) on Saturday to finish behind Gisele Oliveira of Clemson. Oliveira won the national title with an effort of 45-1 3/4 (13.76m).

In the women's 5,000 meters, Sara Bei was leading with 300 meters remaining, but then was tripped from behind by another runner. Bei got to her feet and finished tenth.

The Stanford women finished eighth with 24 points. Tennessee won the NCAA title with 46 points. The Cardinal men placed 13th with 15 points. Arkansas won the team title with 56 points.

In a result that was not posted by Arkansas until Saturday, the men's distance medley relay team finished fourth on Friday night. The team of Russell Brown, Joaquin Chapa, Nick Sebes and Michael Garcia posted a time of 9:33.55. Michigan was awarded the win after Arkansas (which had originally finished first at 9:30.79) was disqualified when Michigan filed a protest that an Arkansas runner had impeded the progress of a Michigan runner. The meet referee agreed with the Michigan protest and thus Arkansas was disqualified. Michigan was timed in 9:30.82.
