Late Innings Cost Beavers In Baseball Loss

March 12, 2005

MALIBU, Calif. - Oregon State saw Pepperdine score six runs in its final two at-bats to take a 9-4 win over the Beavers in non-conference baseball Saturday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. Jacoby Ellsbury had his hitting streak end at 16 games over two seasons for OSU (12-3 overall), which had a three-game winning streak stopped while the Waves (11-7) won their fifth straight.

OSU concludes this weekend's Yellow Book USA Classic against Winthrop on Sunday at 10 a.m.; the game can be heard on www.osubeavers.com. Like the Beavers, the Eagles are 1-1 in the tournament after losing to Pepperdine 4-1 and beating Cal State-Northridge 13-1.

On Saturday, the Beavers took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning only to have the Waves score five runs - the biggest inning Oregon State has allowed this season. The nine runs and 13 hits were season-highs against OSU, and the game marked just the fourth time this season that OSU has allowed an opponent more than three runs.

Pepperdine used five hits and a pair of Beaver errors to put together the decisive inning. Patrick Rooney led off the inning with a home run off OSU starter Anton Maxwell to tie it 4-4, then reliever Jake McCormick allowed a double, a single and an error allowed the go-ahead run to score.

Nate Fogle came on and got a fielder's choice, then allowed a run-scoring double to Steve Kleen to make it 6-4 and Danny Kelly followed with a two-run single through a drawn-in infield for the final runs of the inning and an 8-4 Wave lead.

Oregon State had taken a 3-0 lead in a manner uncharacteristic to this spring's team - via the home run. The Beavers, who had only five homers in their first 14 games, got three in the first four innings on Saturday, all with the bases empty. Andy Jenkins hit his team-high second of the season to leftfield with two out in the first, Shea McFeely led off the second with a drive over the fence in left-center, and Darwin Barney had his first collegiate homer down the leftfield line with two out in the fourth.

All three homers came against Pepperdine lefthander Paul Coleman, who earned several national pitcher of the week honors for his last start - a two-hitter against New Orleans that included a school-record 16 strikeouts.

Pepperdine tied the game with a three-run fifth inning against Maxwell, getting consecutive two-out, run-scoring singles from David Uribes, Luke Salas and Chad Tracy. OSU regained the lead in the top of the sixth against Kleen, who walked Barney with one out, balked him to second and then saw Chris Campos line a pinch-hit run-scoring double down the rightfield line to make it 4-3.

Jenkins was 3-for-4 for the Beavers to boost his batting average to .463, while Campos was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and Cole Gillespie was 2-for-3. McCormick took the pitching loss, his first decision or save in the sophomore righthander's 28 career appearances at OSU.

Uribes was 4-for-5 for Pepperdine, whose 13 hits marked the first time this season that OSU allowed an opponent a double-digit number of hits.
