UCLA Holds Final Football Scrimmage

On Saturday, UCLA held its final scrimmage of Spring Practice at Drake Stadium. The scrimmage, which consisted of approximately 85 plays, produced some outstanding plays on both sides of the ball.

Offensively, the Bruins produced seven touchdowns - five rushing and two passing. Sophomore Chris Markey led the ground game with 86 yards and two touchdowns (19, seven yards) on 13 carries. Sophomore Derrick Williams carried 15 times for 66 tough yards and two touchdowns of seven and four yards. Junior Maurice Drew ran for 57 yards, including a six-yard touchdown, on just nine attempts.

Senior David Koral completed eight of 12 passes for 102 yards and one touchdown - 53 yards to sophomore Marcus Everett. Freshman Pat Cowan completed six of 12 passes for 83 yards and one touchdown - 50 yards to sophomore Brandon Breazell. Freshman Ben Olson completed four of 12 passes for 47 yards but looked much more comfortable than a week ago and made some nice downfield throws.

Everett led all receivers with four catches for 92 yards and one touchdown (53 yards). Breazell made three receptions for 79 yards and one touchdown (50 yards). Senior tight end Marcedes Lewis (12 yards), Drew (12 yards) and sophomore Matthew Slater (19 yards) each had two catches.

Defensively, junior end Justin Hickman recorded four sacks. Senior end Kyle Morgan, freshman tackle Nathaniel Skaggs, sophomore end William Snead and junior end Kevin Harbour were each credited with a sack. Sophomore Bruce Davis made several outstanding plays from his new linebacker position. The secondary also played well with senior Marcus Cassel (37-yard touchdown) and sophomore Michael Norris each intercepting Brian Callahan.

The defense played without tackle Kevin Brown, who recorded six sacks in last Saturday's scrimmage. He was injured on Thursday and has a hyper-extended right knee and a deep bone bruise at the top of the right tibia. He does not require any surgery and will be on crutches for four to six weeks.

During the practice, fans were also able to take a tour of the new football facilities, including weight room, training room, meeting rooms and locker rooms. Following the scrimmage, the players and coaches were available for pictures and autographs.
