March 13, 2005
LOS ANGELES - Steve Schroer threw seven strong innings Sunday to get his second win in three days to lead the UC Irvine Anteaters to an 8-2 win over the host No. 20 USC Trojans at the 2005 Public Storage Baseball Classic at Dedeaux Field. The Anteaters win the Classic with a 2-1 record, beating the Trojans on the head-to-head tiebreaker.
Schroer (3-2) earned tournament most valuable pitcher honors for his efforts after picking up a win on Friday against No. 19 Wichita State. He threw 10 innings this weekend, allowing nine hits and three runs (two earned).
UC Irvine (11-8) touched up USC starter Zack Kalter (1-2) with four runs in the fourth. Danny McCarthy hit an RBI single to right, followed by a sacrifice fly by first baseman Jaime Martinez. Designated hitter Cody Cipriano then hit a two-run homer to right to complete the scoring.
The Trojans got on the scoreboard with two runs in the fifth. Hector Estrella and Blake Sharpe hit RBI singles, but Jeff Clement hit a line drive to Martinez with the bases loaded as Martinez tagged Sharpe for the inning-ending double play.
With four more runs in the ninth, the Anteaters put the game out of reach as Blair Erickson threw two perfect innings, including four strikeouts, to earn his fourth save of the season.
Sharpe went 2-for-4 for USC (9-6) and earned tournament most valuable hitter honors after going 8-for-13 in the tournament.
USC travels to San Diego on Tuesday (March 15) for a 2 p.m. game, which will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com, with Gametracker live stats available.
