Sharpe Goes 5-for-5 As No. 20 USC Gets 6-4 Win Over No. 19 Wichita State
March 12, 2005
LOS ANGELES - Junior shortstop Blake Sharpe (Moorpark) went 5-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI Saturday as the No. 20 USC Trojans defeated the No. 19 Wichita State Shockers, 6-4, in day two action at the 2005 Public Storage Baseball Classic at Dedeaux Field. It was Sharpe's first career five-hit game.
USC improves to 9-5 on the season while Wichita State falls to 15-3 overall. The Trojans have now played 10 of 14 games against Top 25 teams, posting a 6-4 record to date.
Junior Brett Bannister (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) earned the victory for the Trojans, tying personal career-highs in innings pitched (6 1/3) and strikeouts (seven). He allowed two runs on five hits with one walk. Sophomore Paul Koss retired four straight batters to earn his third save of the season.
Wichita State opened the game with two runs off Bannister in the first. Tyler Hill singled and moved to third on a double by Nick McCoola. Derek Schermerhorn hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Hill, followed by an RBI single from catcher Joe Muich. However, USC's preseason All-America catcher Jeff Clement stopped the rally by throwing out two runners on steal attempts (Muich and second baseman Damon Sublett) to end the inning. Clement has thrown out seven of 12 runners this season (58%).
After Clement's defensive plays, Bannister settled down by retiring 16 of the next 17 batters faced. He did not allow a hit until Sublett's single with one out in the seventh. A walk to Blake Hurlbutt put runners and first and second and brought in USC reliever Michael Friedman, who got Brandon Hall to ground into a 5-4-3 double play.
Sophomore center fielder Daniel Perales tied the game with RBI singles in the fourth and sixth innings for the Trojans.
Booth entered the game in the seventh and was greeted by Baron Frost's leadoff double to center. Pinch hitter Dale Legaspi laid down a perfect bunt down for a base hit to put runners at the corners. Freshman Matt Cusick singled home Frost for the go-ahead run. Sharpe faked a bunt and slashed a double over the head of right fielder Matt Brown for another run. Billy Hart capped the four-run inning with a squeeze bunt, scoring Sharpe.
USC scored four runs off Noah Booth (2-2), who took the loss for Wichita State.
The 2005 Public Storage Baseball Classic concludes tomorrow with Texas Tech playing Wichita State at noon and USC hosting UC Irvine at 4 p.m. USC's game will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com, with Gametracker live stats available for both games.
