Alumnae Day: The Cal women kick off the spring campaign at their annual Alumnae Day on Saturday, March 19. All alumnae, parents and friends of the program are encouraged to attend this year's event, which begins at 11 a.m. The festivities will take place at the T. Gary Rodgers Rowing Center, located at 2999 Glasscock St. in Oakland.
'Alumni Day is always a great way to start the season, and it will be a wonderful opportunity for everyone to see the new facility,' said head coach Dave O'Neill.
University of British Columbia: Cal women will begin their 2005 season against the University of British Columbia on Sunday, March 20 at Redwood Shores. The first race is set to begin at 10 a.m. Last year, Cal beat UBC in all races, with all its boats rowing to double-digit time victories, including the novice eight finishing 31 seconds ahead of the Thunderbirds.
2005 Season Outlook: With 12 returning letterwinners from last year's fourth-place NCAA squad, the Bears have the experience they need to make the 2005 season the most successful in the program's history. Building upon the success in 2004, which included the program's first win over Washington in 13 years, Cal enters the season with renewed energy and a commitment to reaching a higher level of competition.
Leading the way for the Bears are senior co-captains Remy Hitomi and Laura Terheyden. Hitomi, a former walk-on from Cypress, Calif., returns for a second year as captain and looks to repeat as the varsity coxswain. Having spent the previous three years in the varsity eight, Terheyden, a former junior national team rower from Colma, Calif., has proven skill and valued experience.
