Softball Opens Easton Stadium vs. Texas, Utah State
March 14, 2005
Having completed its pre-conference tournament schedule and enjoyed a full week without a game, the Bruins will return to the field this weekend, playing host to No. 4/11 Texas in the first game of the season at UCLA's Easton Stadium. Following Tuesday's single game, the Bruins will host Utah State for a Thursday afternoon doubleheader beginning at 1 pm.
Easton Stadium Renovation Nears Completion
UCLA Softball's on-campus facility, Easton Stadium, is currently being renovated to provide fans with approximately 1,300 chair-back seats. The project is nearing completion and the Bruins are aiming to return to campus for a Mar. 15 match-up with the Texas Longhorns.
For UCLA's two gamedays at Easton this week, temporary bleachers are available for approximately 275 fans. There will be limited standing-room areas available for additional fans. Because the stadium entrance will be one of the final areas to be completed on the renovation, fans will need to enter Easton Stadium by walking up the driveway to the left field corner of the facility, then walking between the Sharron Backus Clubhouse and the UCLA bullpen to access seating areas.
The facility is scheduled for completion prior to UCLA's Pac-10 home opener against Arizona State on April 15. The project was delayed by unusually heavy rains in the Los Angeles area during January, one of the wettest periods in 100 years of weather records in the area.
Selden Sweeps National, Conference Honors Last Week
UCLA freshman pitcher Anjelica Selden was named the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Week, NFCA/Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week and Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week following her performance at the Bulldog Classic, March 3-6. Selden totaled 70 strikeouts during the Bulldog Classic in Fresno, Calif.
Selden compiled two no-hit performances against St. John's and Bulldog Classic host No. 18 Fresno State, in addition to a 23-strikeout game vs. Ole Miss. The 23 K's is the highest singe-game total for a Bruin pitcher since the pitching distance was moved from 40 to 43 feet for the 1988 season and since the optic yellow ball was introduced for the 1993 season.
During the tournament, Selden allowed just one walk while striking out 70 of the 120 batters she faced on the weekend. She went 3-1 with a 0.20 ERA while recording two shutouts allowing just eight hits and four runs in 35.2 innings pitched while holding her opponents to a .070 batting average and was honored as part of the Bulldog Classic All-Tournament Team.
