Women's Basketball Head Coach Judy Spoelstra Relieved Of Duties
March 14, 2005
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State University Director of Athletics Bob De Carolis announced a coaching change today for women's basketball. Citing a need for a transition in program direction, he announced that Judy Spoelstra has been relieved of her duties. Oregon State finished the 2004-05 season with a 6-23 overall record and a 1-17 mark in Pac-10 play.
Spoelstra had a 133-158 (.457) overall record and a 67-113 (.372) Pacific-10 Conference mark during her 10 years (1996-2005) at the helm of the Oregon State program. The Beavers made one NCAA Tournament appearance in 1996, Spoelstra's first year at the helm, and made four consecutive appearances in the Women's National Invitation Tournament (2001-2004).
'This was a very difficult decision, but we felt it was time for our women's basketball program to go in a different direction,' said De Carolis. 'We appreciate all the effort that Judy gave us during her 10 seasons and we wish her the best.'
Spoelstra, a former Oregon State All-American, spent six seasons as the head coach at Montana State University before coming to OSU for the 1995-96 campaign.
In 16 years as a head coach at the Division I level, Spoelstra has compiled a 231-226 (.505) career mark.
