Eighth-Ranked Women Of Troy Saddle Up To Host No. 13 Texas

This Week -- After opening Pac-10 play with three wins last week, the eighth-ranked USC women's tennis team (9-1, 3-0) hosts the No. 13 Texas Longhorns (8-2) on Wednesday, March 16, at 1:30 p.m. at Marks Stadium.
The Women of Troy return five letterwinners and welcome four newcomers in 2005. The young team features no seniors and a starting lineup led by two freshmen, three sophomores and a junior. USC went 18-7 overall in 2004, finished second in the Pac-10 with a 7-1 record and advanced to the NCAA Round of 16.
ITA Ranking Updates -- The Women of Troy jumped five spots to No. 8 in the latest ITA rankings released on March 15. The Trojans boast two players ranked in the Top 20 in singles with No. 15 Nicole Leimbach (freshman) and No. 16 Lindsey Nelson (freshman), USC's Anca Anastasiu and Lindsey Nelson come in at No. 56 in doubles.
Youth Comes Through-- USC freshman Lindsey Nelson and sophomore Anca Anastasiu have done more than what is normally expected of such youth. Nelson holds a spotless record so far this season everywhere on the court, while Anastasiu holds only a single blemish. Nelson and Anastasiu have teamed up for a 10-0 record in doubles play at the No. 2 position, where they are currently nationally ranked at No. 56. In singles, Nelson has only dropped one set all season where she again stands undefeated at 10-0. Anastasiu has only dropped three sets with a 9-1 season record.
USC vs. Texas -- Wednesday's match against Texas will mark the 16th meeting between these two teams. USC owns an 8-7 advantage in the all-time series. Last season, the Trojans defeated the Longhorns, 5-2, in Austin, Texas.
RECENT RESULTS-- The Women of Troy are coming off three Pac-10 victories last week, including a 4-3 victory over crosstown rival and 10th-ranked UCLA. The Trojans beat UCLA at Marks Tennis Stadium before heading north to face the Washington schools. USC traveled to Pullman, Wash. on Friday, March 11 and swept No. 75 Washington State, 7-0. Next, the Trojans headed over to Seattle where they defeated No. 12 Washington, 6-1, on Saturday, March 12.

Head Coach Richard Gallien -- Richard Gallien is in his 10th season at the helm of the USC women's tennis program. Last season he guided the 2004 Women of Troy to a 18-7 overall record, the NCAA Round of 16 and a No. 8 final national ranking. Gallien began his career at Pepperdine, coaching the men's team for three years, before joining the Trojan family. Over the last 12 years, he has compiled a 219-107 (.672) overall record and his teams have made nine appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including an appearance in the NCAA Quarterfinals four out of the last six years.
