Men's Tennis Dropped by Clemson, 5-2

CLEMSON, S.C. - The Arizona State University men's tennis team was in action against Clemson Tuesday afternoon at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center, dropping the dual to the Tigers, 5-2. The Sun Devils fall to 6-4 with the loss, while the Tigers improve to 18-2.
Clemson took the early lead over ASU, winning the three doubles matches to claim the first point of the day. On Court No. 1, the Sun Devils duo of Jonathan Kinsella and Andy Colombo fell to the Tigers' Nathan Thompson and Ryan Young, 8-3. On the No. 2 court, ASU's team of Mike Beatty and Clinton Letcher battled against Clemson's Clement Reix and Sander Koning, dropping the match, 8-1. On Court No. 3, the Sun Devil team of Nick Hegarty and Ryan McBride were upended by the Tiger duo of Brett Twente and Ryan Cook in a hard fought match that ended, 9-8, in favor of Clemson.
In singles action, the Sun Devils were unable to overpower the Tigers, claiming only two of the six matches to take the loss. ASU's two victories came at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, with McBride and Beatty topping their Tiger opponents. McBride, playing in the No. 5 position, overcame Twente in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, to earn ASU's first point. Similarly, Beatty battled against Clemson's Clint Boling in a hard fought three-set match that saw Beatty win the first set and Boling claim the second set to force it into a third and final set to determine the point, in which Beatty defeated Boling, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
The Tigers proved too strong for the Sun Devils on the other four courts, earning victories on each court en route to victory. ASU's Christopher Biro was upended in straight sets at the No. 1 spot by Clemson's Thompson, 6-4, 6-4. In the No. 2 position, Kinsella won the first set, but was unable to keep the lead as Koning battled back to claim the next two sets, defeating Kinsella, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. ASU's Letcher, playing in the No. 3 position, took the first set in his match against Clemson's Reix, but was unable to hold on as Reix took the match, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Rounding out the dual was action at No. 4 singles, where the Sun Devils' Hegarty was overpowered by Young in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
The Arizona State University men's tennis team is back in action Friday morning, March 18, as they take on Auburn. The dual is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. ET.
