Spradlin Pitches No. 23 USC To 6-1 Win At San Diego
March 15, 2005
SAN DIEGO - Junior transfer Jack Spradlin (Bonita/Eastlake HS/Southwestern College) threw a season-high six innings and allowed just one run Tuesday as the No. 23 USC Trojans defeated the San Diego Toreros, 6-1, in nonconference action at Cunningham Stadium. Spradlin scattered seven hits to earn his first win as a Trojan.
USC improves to 10-6 on the season while San Diego falls to 16-11-1. The Trojans swept the two-game season series with the Toreros.
Spradlin worked out of several jams early. After the Trojans intentionally walked Jordan Abruzzo to load the bases in the first, Spradlin retired Shane Buschini and Logan Gelbrich to end in the inning. Back-to-back singles in the third by Jamie Hesselgesser and Randy Curtis went for naught for the Toreros after Spradlin got Abruzzo to ground into a 6-4-3 double play. Buschini flied out to center to end the third.
On the afternoon, Spradlin walked two batters and struck out four. Sean Warlop (0-2) took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) in 5 2/3 innings.
Sophomore center fielder Daniel Perales led off the second with a solo shot to center to give USC an early 1-0 lead. Sophomore Cyle Hankerd walked to lead off the Trojans' fourth and scored when third baseman Billy Hart doubled down the left field line. The cut off throw from Ryan Lilly hit Hankerd in the back for the second run. After Perales advanced Hart to third on a ground out, right fielder Zack Kalter hit a ground ball that richocheted off USD second baseman Kevin Hansen's glove into right for the Trojans' third run.
Lucas Duda hit an RBI groundout in the sixth and Sharpe scored in the sixth from third after a balk was called against Torero pitcher Dustin Church for a 5-1 lead. The Trojans used another way to score in the ninth when pinch runner Darin Vieira made it 6-1 off a wild pitch from Church.
Perales and Duda had two hits each for the Trojans. With his triple, Sharpe pushes his season-high hitting streak to seven games.
USC competes at the 2005 OCYSF-UC Irvine Tournament this weekend in Irvine. The Trojans will face Nevada on Friday (March 18) at 2:30 p.m., Stony Brook on Saturday (March 19) at 1 p.m. and UC Irvine on Sunday (March 20) at 5 p.m. All three games of the tournament will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com, with Gametracker live stats available.
