March 16, 2005
Cyndi Gallagher's No. 10 UCLA Bruin swim team will head to West Lafayette, IN and the campus of Purdue for the NCAA Championships this weekend (Mar. 17-19). Nine individuals and two relays are slated to compete for NCAA titles.
The Bruins are led by junior Kim Vandenberg and sophomore Katie Arnold. Arnold won a Pac-10 title in the 100 Back and currently ranks third in the nation in that event (53.22). At NCAA's, Arnold will compete in the 100 Back, 200 Back, 50 Free, 200 Free Relay and 400 Medley Relay. Vandenberg just missed a Pac-10 title in the 200 Fly, but will be gunning for an NCAA title in Indiana. Currently, Vandenberg ranks third in the 200 Fly and sixth in the 100 Fly and will vie for titles in both events. Vandenberg will also swim in the 50 Free and both relays this weekend.
Also competing at NCAA's are - junior Shellene Catalano (200 IM, 100 Breast and 200 Breast); sophomore Katie Nelson (500 Free, 1650 Free, 200 Free and 200 Medley Relay); senior Kim Scarborough (200 IM, 400 IM, 200 Back and 200 Free Relay); junior Eileen Seissen (100 Breast and 200 Medley Relay); freshman Nicolette Teo (100 Breast, 200 Breast and 400 Medley Relay); sophomore Amy Thurman (200 Free Relay and 200 Medley Relay) and freshman Chiemi Yamamoto (200 IM, 400 IM and 200 Breast).
At last year's NCAA Championships, the Bruins placed seventh with 195 points as 11 swimmers earned All-American honors and although UCLA has fewer competitors then last year, they still hope to achieve numerous All-American honors and possibly produce an NCAA champion.
