BEAR NOTES: The 2005 California baseball team (13-8) will be traveling to Hawaii-Hilo (1-27) for its last non-conference series of the year before starting Pac-10 play versus Washington State, Mar. 24-26 at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears have played better on the road this season, owning a 8-3 record away from Evans Diamond and a 5-5 mark at home. Cal rebounded from only winning one of three games last week against UNLV (W 13-2, L 5-2, L 7-4) by producing an impressive pitching performance in a 2-0 win Tuesday at Pacific. The Bears nearly no-hit the Tigers as junior right-hander Joe Todoroff (6.3 innings, no hits, four walks, career-high nine strikeouts) and senior right-hander Matt Swanson (2.7 innings, one hit, three strikeouts) combined to limit Pacific to an infield single in the bottom of the ninth. Sophomore center fielder Brennan Boesch has been swinging a hot bat all season long, leading the Bears with a .443 batting average, 35 hits, seven doubles, a triple, five home runs, 16 RBI, 59 total bases, a .747 slugging percentage and a .511 on-base percentage. Cal's nine-game winning streak from Feb. 13-Mar. 1 was the Bears' longest winning streak since 1998. During that streak, the Cal pitching staff had a team ERA of 2.93, including four saves by senior left-hander Travis Talbott, a save by junior right-hander Alex Trafton, a complete game with one walk and 10 strikeouts by senior right-hander Eric Dworkis and a 7-0 shutout of Saint Mary's. Freshman second baseman Josh Satin, who redshirted last season after dislocating his right shoulder in fall practice, has taken advantage of his opportunities this season, batting .329 with seven doubles, two home runs and a team-leading 18 RBI. Satin has hit a double in each of the Bears' last five games.

SERIES RECORD: Cal has a 1-0 series record against the Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans. In the only meeting between the two schools, the Bears won 12-6, Apr. 18, 1995 at Evans Diamond. Hawaii-Hilo was a NAIA school from 1977-93 and became NCAA Division I in 1994.

HEAD COACH David Esquer: Esquer, 39, is in his sixth season at Cal with a career record of 154-146 (.513). In 2001, he was the Pac-10 Coach of the Year after leading the Bears to a 34-25 mark, a third place finish in the Pac-10 (14-10) and a berth to the NCAA Regional in Baton Rouge, LA (1-2). Twenty-five Cal players have signed professional contracts since Esquer became coach, including Conor Jackson, who was a first round draft choice of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2003. On June 10, 1999, Esquer became only the 10th coach in the history of Cal baseball, which began in 1892. He came to Berkeley after serving as the top assistant at Pepperdine from 1996-99. Esquer was the No. 2 assistant coach at Stanford under Mark Marquess from 1991-96. A shortstop at Stanford from 1984-87, he was a starter on the 1987 College World Series championship team, earning All-Tournament honors. Esquer also earned All-Pac-10 Southern Division honors and went on to play professional baseball for four seasons with the Baltimore, California and Milwaukee organizations.

Hawaii-Hilo's lone win this season was a 3-1 victory over Hawaii Pacific Feb. 12. Top hitters for the Vulcans are senior third baseman Johnny Dudoit (.349, 2 HR, 11 RBI), junior left fielder David Chu (.298, 0 HR, 12 RBI) and freshman second baseman Michael Higa (.271, 0 HR, 7 RBI). In 2004, the Vulcans finished 9-43 overall.

BOESCH'S GOLDEN SEASON: Sophomore center fielder Brennan Boesch continues to be Cal's hotest hitter, sporting a .443 average (35-for-79) with seven doubles, a triple, five home runs and 16 RBI. Boesch also owns a team-best .747 slugging percentage, a .511 on-base percentage and is 11-for-21 (.524) with runners in scoring position. He is currently on a career-high nine-game hitting streak from Feb. 26 (19-for-37, .514, 4-2B, 4-HR, 12 RBI), has gotten at least one hit in 18 of 21 games this season and has 10 multiple hit games. In Cal's first victory this season, Boesch was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and scored the winning run in the Bears' Feb. 5 extra-inning win over UC Irvine. Last season in his first collegiate at-bat, Boesch hit a two-run homer versus BYU, and went on to hit another two-run homer later in the game against the Cougars.

BEARS FEATURE YOUNG, TALENTED INFIELD: The Bears feature one of the youngest infields in the nation as three of their four infielders are freshmen - shortstop Kyle Spraker, second baseman Josh Satin and first baseman Mike Van Winden. Spraker, a true freshman, has started 17 games at short, missing four games due to a strained hamstring. He is hitting .270, but more importantly Spraker has only made one error in 75 chances for a .987 fielding percentage. Satin, a redshirt freshman, is batting .329 with a team-leading 18 RBI. He has now hit a double in each of his last five games and is hitting .516 (16-for-31) with runners in scoring position. Van Winden, also a redshirt freshman, has also proven to be a valuable addition, batting .324 with five doubles, a home run, 12 RBI and a team-leading 17 walks. This season, he has knocked in the game-winning RBI at Long Beach State and has scored the game-winning run against UC Irvine.

SENIOR CAPTAIN EINSPAHR: Cal's lone veteran in the infield is senior third baseman and captain Matt Einspahr. Einspahr is having a solid season, batting .257 with two doubles, three home runs and is tied for second on the team with 16 RBI. He entered the 2005 season with only 18 career RBI and one career home run. Einspahr had a key three-run homer in the Bears' 8-3 come-from-behind victory over San Francisco, Mar. 1, and had a two-run homer in Cal's 10-4 victory over Stanford Mar. 6.

TALBOTT TOP RELEIVER: Senior left-hander Travis Talbott has been one of the Pac-10's top relievers this season, earning a save at Loyola Marymount, two saves at Long Beach State, a win versus Saint Mary's Feb. 25 and a save Mar. 1 versus San Francisco. Talbott is second in the conference with four saves, has a 1.02 ERA and a opposing batting average of .138, only giving up two earned runs in 17.7 innings. He is also fourth in the Pac-10 with 11 appearances. Another impressive state for Talbott is his 15 strikeouts and only four walks in his 17.7 innings. He came into this season with one career save and a 4-1 career record in 54 appearances.

VALUABLE TRANSFER DWORKIS: A key addition to Cal's pitching staff is senior transfer Eric Dworkis, who played at Gonzaga from 2002-04. Dworkis was outstanding Feb. 26 at Saint Mary's, throwing the Bears' first complete game since Adam Gold's one-hitter at Fresno State last season (Feb. 21). Dworkis went 9.0 innings with six hits, one run, only one walk with 10 strikeouts. His 10 strikeouts were only one away from his career-best 11 strikeouts, recorded against the Gaels when he was a sophomore. At Stanford Mar. 6, Dworkis, despite giving up 11 hits, limited the Cardinal to three runs with one walk and three strikeouts in 8.3 innings. He leads the Bears with 31 strikeouts in 39.3 innings and is third in the Pac-10 in innings pitched. Last year at Gonzaga, Dworkis was 8-4 with five complete games, earning second team All-West Coast Conference honors.

BEARS HAVE A FLAIR FOR THE DRAMATIC: The 2005 Bears have won two extra-inning games this season and have captured two road games in the top of the ninth inning. Cal won its first game of the season in extra-innings when freshman second baseman Josh Satin had a two-out single in the bottom of the 11th inning to defeat UC Irvine, 5-4, Feb. 5. On Feb. 13 at Loyola Marymount, sophomore left fielder Chris Errecart had a three-run homer in the ninth to defeat the Lions, 8-5. On Feb. 20, freshman Mike Van Winden had the game-winning two-run double in the ninth inning at Long Beach State, followed by junior right-hander Alex Trafton forcing a double play with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth. Most recently, senior designated hitter James Holder had a two-out single in the bottom of the 12th to defeat Saint Mary's, 5-4, Feb. 25. Due to weather, the Bears have also been forced to play three doubleheaders, but have won five of six of those contests, with their only loss being a 3-2 affair at Stanford Mar. 6.
