Andrew Finishes Fourth, Kovacs Seventh, on Day Two at NCAA Championships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Freshman Caitlin Andrew and senior All-American Ágnes Kovács led the Arizona State University women's swimming and diving team on the second day of competition at the 2005 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships held at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center on the campus of Purdue University. The Sun Devils are in 15th place after 14 events with 52 total points.
Andrew, who finished seventh in the preliminary swim, led the Sun Devils on the second day of competition with the highest finish for ASU at the NCAA Championships. She swam into a fourth-place finish in the 100 butterfly Friday evening with a time of 53.06, bettering her preliminary time of 53.35. Andrew won the Pac-10 title in the 100 butterfly event with a school-record setting time of 52.64. Her time ranks as the second fastest in the nation. Mary DeScenza of Georgia took the NCAA title with a season-best time of 52.11.
Kovács, competing in her final NCAA Championship for the Sun Devils, swam into seventh-place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.39. She entered the finals Friday evening in eighth, after her preliminary swim of 1:01.44. Kovács finished in the top-seven in the 100 breaststroke at the NCAAs in each of her four years of competition at ASU. Caroline Bruce of Stanford took the NCAA title with a season-best time of 59.55
Senior All-American Trisha Tumlinson, who won the Pac-10 title and Zone E Regional title in the platform this season, was in action in the three-meter springboard event in the diving pool. Tumlinson scored a 448.55 to finish 23rd overall. She scored a 273.70 on the one-meter event Thursday to take 12th in that event.
The 2005 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships continues through Saturday at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. Saturday's event schedule includes the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 400 freestyle relay and platform diving.
Preliminary action begins at 11 a.m. ET, with ASU having participants in the 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 1650 freestyle, 400 freestyle relay and platform diving events. Individual participants for Saturday's competition include: Andrew (100 freestyle), Christine Creek (200 breaststroke), Sarah A Fischer (1650 freestyle), Kathryn Hennessy (1650 freestyle), Kovács (200 breaststroke), Heidi Schmidt (200 breaststroke), Florencia Szigeti (100 freestyle) and Tumlinson (platform diving).
