Beavers Sweep Sacramento State

March 18, 2005

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State's Jacoby Ellsbury had four hits in the first game and Dallas Buck struck out a career-high 10 batters in the opener as the Beavers swept Sacramento State 8-2 and 7-4 in non-conference baseball Friday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Beavers (15-3 overall), ranked as high as 22nd nationally this week, have won three straight after Darwin Barney homered and Anton Maxwell pitched into the seventh inning for the victory in the second game.

OSU and Sacramento State (7-14-1) turned Friday's date into a doubleheader due to the rain forecast for this weekend. The teams are now scheduled to conclude their series Saturday at 1 p.m.; if wet weather forces the game to be postponed or halted, they would try to wrap up the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.

'Overall, I thought our guys played well,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'Any time you can win two in one day, it's a good day.'

On Friday, the Beavers tied their season-high with 17 hits in the opener and Ellsbury was 4-for-5 with a double and two runs batted in. Shea McFeely and Ryan Gipson were both 3-for-4 in the first game for OSU, which scored twice in the first inning and tacked on four more runs in the second for a 6-1 lead.

After grounding out to second in his first trip to the plate Friday, Ellsbury had gone hitless in his last 13 at-bats. He came back with four straight hits, including a run-scoring single in the second inning and a run-scoring double in the seventh.

'My swing was kind of off,' said Ellsbury, who is batting .408 this season. 'And when I'd hit it hard, somebody would catch it. It was nice get some hits in the first game. My swing feels good; it's more mental than anything, that's how baseball is. It's nice to get two wins.'

Ellsbury also had a pair of stolen bases and now has 44 in his career, tying him for fourth on the Beavers' all-time list of career leaders with Kim Bradshaw (1957-59).

Buck improved to 4-0 with the win, but his string of innings without allowing an earned run ended at 24 2/3 when the Hornets plated their second run with two out in the bottom of the sixth. In six-plus innings, Buck scattered six hits and walked two while striking out 10; the Pacific-10 earned run average leader entering the week now has a mark of 0.96.

Nate Fogle got the save in the first game for three scoreless innings of work, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three. It was the start of a good day for the Beaver bullpen, as Jake McCormick then got his first career save in the second game by pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out two.

'I thought Nate Fogle was really good in the first game, he was really sharp,' Casey said. 'And that's as good as I've seen Jake McCormick this year, he had a good fastball and he threw his off-speed pitch for a strike.'

After Maxwell gave up single runs in the first and second innings of the second game, Barney's two-run homer in the bottom of the second tied it at 2-2. McFeely's run-scoring single up the middle gave OSU a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third, but Brett Flowers tied the game for Sacramento State with a homer leading off the top of the fourth.

OSU got the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth as a two-out error opened the door for threeunearned runs, with Chris Kunda providing a run-scoring double and Jenkins a run-scoring infield single. Jenkins, the Pac-10 batting leader entering the week, was 4-for-9 in the doubleheader to leave his average at .452.

Maxwell went 6 1/3 innings to improve his record to 3-0 this season, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk while striking out five.
