Freeman Earns Sixth Win As Cougars Defeat Wolverines 11-2

PULLMAN, Wash. -- - Jimmy Freeman earned his sixth win of the season as the Washington State baseball team defeated Utah Valley State 11-2 Friday at Bailey-Brayton Field in the first game of a four-game series.

Freeman (6-0) started the game on the mound for the Cougars (13-9) throwing six innings while allowing four hits and one run. WSU is now 7-0 for the season when the senior gets the starting nod on the hill. Dane Renkert, Nick Cebula and Brett Sommer also saw mound time for the Cougs. The three relievers each pitched one inning, allowing one run and two hits.

'It was another great night and start by Jimmy Freeman,' WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. 'In the late to middle innings, as a team, we had a solid showing. Once again we had good pitching, solid offense and good defense.'

UVSC's (5-14) starting pitcher Kam Mickolio (1-3) took the loss, pitching six innings. He allowed eight earned runs and 12 hits.

The Cougars posted the first runs of the game in the fourth with run-scoring singles by Jeff Miller and Justin McClure, as well as a balk to score Jim Murphy.

The Wolverines scored a run in the sixth on a single by Trent Perry to plate Canyon Vance, who led off the inning with a double to left center. UVSC posted its final run of the game with a single by Kory Drew to score Jeremy Harris in the seventh.

WSU added five runs in its half of the sixth, the first coming on a solo home run to left center by Murphy, his third shot of the season. The remaining runs of the inning were scored on a sacrifice fly by Kaeo Rubin, a single by Jay Miller and a two-run double by Brady Everett.

The Cougars pushed the score to 10-2 in the seventh with a two-run double by Kaeo Rubin. Rubin finished the night going 2-for-4 driving home three runs and extending his current hitting streak to eight games. In the eighth, WSU posted the final run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Zach McAngus.

WSU and USVC will play a doubleheader Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field. The game time for the first game of the day has been changed from 1 p.m. to noon. The second game will begin approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first game.
