Huskies Fall To Nebraska At Kia Klassic

FULLERTON, Calif.-- The 14th-ranked Washington softball team (14-8) lost to 18th-ranked Nebraska (18-5), 4-1 this evening to open the Kia Klassic. Freshman Caitlin Noble pitched 3.2 innings of relief for the Huskies, notching all 11 outs by way of strikeout.

The Huskies struck first, scoring one run in the first inning on one hit. Freshman Ashley Charters led off with an infield single and scored on a Nebraska error. Dominique Lastrapes hit into a fielder's choice and the NU shortstop threw the ball into right field, scoring Charters from first base.

The Huskers came back in the third inning, scoring three runs on a home run by Jamie Waldecker over the left field fence to take the 3-1 lead. Elizabeth Rock and Sheena Lawrick, who reached base on a fielder's choice and walk, scored on the hit. Trisha Tannahill followed with a single to trigger a UW pitching change. Noble entered the game and struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

Nebraska scored an insirance run in the fourth inning on two infield singles. Anne Steffan singled to the shortstop and moved to third on a stolen bases and wild pitch. Rock then hit a sharp comebacker to the circle that Noble couldn't handle, allowing Steffan to score to give the Huskers the 4-1 lead.

Noble shut Nebraska down in the fifth and sixth innings, recording all six outs by way of strikeout but Washington's offense was unable to make a come back.

UW standed nine runners on base and Nebraska left eight.

Ashley Boek (8-5) took the loss as she gave up five hits and three runs over 2.1 innings with three strikeouts. Noble allowed just one hit and stuck out 11 in 3.2 innings of relief.

Ashley DeBurh (9-4) earned the win for Nebraska as she held Washington to five hits and struck out 13.

Noble and Charters each had two hits for UW.

The Huskies return to action Friday with pool play games against DePaul (1:30 pm) and Penn State (6:15 pm).
