No. 17 Softball Rolls Past Long Island, 8-0, In Five Innings
March 18, 2005
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Flawless defense and powerful bats helped lift the No. 17 ranked Oregon State softball team to an 8-0 five inning victory against Long Island University in Friday's opening game of the Capital Classic hosted by Sacramento State.
The Beavers (15-6) - winners of nine straight - jumped in front early against Long Island, picking up a pair of unearned runs in the opening inning behind a two-out double to right field by sophomore hurler Brianne McGowan.
OSU extended its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second inning as freshman Cambria Miranda belted her third home run of the season with a lead-off blast over the right-center field fence.
McGowan (12-2) continued her dominance in the circle, allowing just one ball out of the infield over three innings of work. LIU picked up a single in the opening inning of play, but the Beavers cleared the bases when shortstop Mia Longfellow combined with Kelly Petersen and Vanessa Iapala for a 6-4-3 double play.
OSU put the game away with five runs on five hits in the bottom of the third. Iapala started things off with a home run over the center field fence and after a walk by McGowan, the Beavers picked a single from Lisa Allen, a 2-RBI single from Miranda and an RBI single from Sherina Galvan. Junior outfielder Adrienne Alo capped off the frame with her team-leading seventh home run of the season with a shot to center.
Junior hurler Amy Klever entered the game in relief during the fourth inning and forced six straight groundouts to retire the Long Island batters in order and end the game.
The Beaver infield played flawless defense, making every put-out in the contest.
OSU continues tournament action with a 12:30 p.m. game against Iowa.
