No. 17 Softball Wins 10th Straight With 6-2 Victory Over Iowa
March 18, 2005
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The No. 17 ranked Oregon State softball team won its 10th straight game as the Beavers rolled past University of Iowa, 6-2, in Friday's action at the Capital Classic hosted by Sacramento State.
Iowa (21-5) used a pair of first inning hits to get on the scoreboard as Sami Bough's two-out single up the middle plated Summer Downs, allowing the Hawkeyes to grab a 1-0 advantage.
The Beavers (16-6) rallied back behind three hits in the bottom of the second. Freshman Cambria Miranda continued her torrid hitting on the day with a triple to right field and eventually knotted the score after a one-out single to the right-side by third baseman Sherina Galvan. OSU took a 3-1 lead after junior outfielder Adrienne Alo hit her eighth home run of the season - and second of the day - with a two-run shot over the fence in right field.
OSU added to its lead in the third inning when sophomore pitcher Brianne McGowan helped her own cause and put the game out of reach when she belted her fifth home run of the year with a three-run blast over the left-center field fence.
The home run was Oregon State's fifth of the day, giving the Beavers 28 long balls on the year after 22 games of action. Six different players have gone deep at least three times on the season.
McGowan (13-2) picked up her ninth consecutive victory - a steak that started on Feb. 25. The 6-2 right-hander struck out nine, including the side in the seventh inning, en route to her 10th complete game of the season.
The Beavers continue Capital Classic action on Saturday with a 10 a.m. contest against Minnesota, followed by a 3 p.m. outing against tournament host Sacramento State.
