No. 2 California Splits Opening Day Slate at Capital Classic
March 18, 2005
BERKELEY - The No. 2 California softball team (23-3) cruised to a 6-0 victory against Portland State but fell to No. 23 Northwestern on a Wildcat game-winning home run, 2-1, during Friday's first round at the Capital Classic at the Sacramento Softball Complex.
Cal added four runs in the second. Third baseman Vicky Galindo, playing her first game since Feb. 27 because of injury, got the inning off with a steal of home. James advanced to second on the play, and scored on a single by catcher Haley Woods. The next batter, Eldredge, plated Woods from second. Another base hit, this time from second baseman Jessica Pamanian, scored Eldredge and gave Cal a 5-0 lead.
James tallied her third hit of the game in the third, scoring Galindo for a 6-0 Cal advantage. The Bears banged out 12 hits against Portland State (4-12) and left seven runners on base. Starter Kelly Anderson struck out six in improving to 11-1.
In the second game, Northwestern catcher Jamie Dotson smacked a two-out, two-run homer over the centerfield barricade for a Wildcat walk-off win.
It was just Northwestern's second hit of the game and the only one since shortstop Stephanie Chruchwell led off the bottom of the first with a single. Cal starter Kristina Thorson, who hit third baseman Kristen Amegin with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, struck out 10 hitters but fell to 11-2.
Eldredge led off the top of the fifth with a solo homer for a 1-0 Cal lead. The Bears are now 21-1 when leading after five innings.
Cal resumes tournament action Saturday against BYU (10 a.m.) and Iowa (3 p.m.).
